HDR / Tone Mapping issues with Movies

Server Version#: 1.40.5.8829
Player Version#: 10.19.2.1191 (74c193cc)

I am having some issues with Tone Mapping on movies recently, that have previously been fine. (deleted, redownloaded)

Setup:
Nvidia Shield Player > HDMI 1 > Sony A95K > HDMI 3 > Sonos Arc

Configuration on Nvidia Shield Player:
Passthrough: HDMI
Refresh Rate Switching: Off
Resolution Switching: Off
Auto Play Countdown: 5 Seconds
Display Nerd Info: On (but can’t seem to find a way to access it through the interface)

Everything looks pretty washed out, and it doesn’t matter if I switch audio tracks, or disable / enable subtitles. When I play the same file in VLC - everything works fine.

It seems like this might have made some channels to the backlighting, but in this case - the file isn’t getting recognized as Dolby by the TV, so the Dolby Light & Dolby Dark picture modes do not display.

Shield Log - deadpool2-color-grading-issue.log (1.2 MB)
Plex Media Server Logs_2024-08-09_19-37-58.zip (3.5 MB)
deadpool2-mediainfo.xml.txt (75.4 KB)

Thats very strange, was their a problem in v10.18 with the same content?

Our latest fix for Sony TVs was to remove some non-transparent backgrounds that were causing grey bars to appear when playing DoVi content on Sony TVs, but it wont of impacted the actual video, only the blackbars that appear above and below the video.

Checking the logs and media info, it doesnt appear that the video is using DoVi, and looks to be HDR10.

I have seen the same, Nvidia Shield Pro as the Player, Synology as the server, sometimes when I start a show the colour is washed out, and “wrong”. Stopping the playback, and then starting it again seems to rectify the issue when it occurs.

That I have seen, unfortunately though it appears to be an Android bug where the decoder hasnt correctly sent the HDR/DoVi metadata to the TV (or AVR). I’ve been investigating but havent been able to find a solution that allows us to ensure Android always sends the correct metadata.

Me too :raising_hand_man:t3:. Sony A80J with NVIDIA Shield Pro 2019 and Sony HT-A9, with HDMI audio passthrough, and Plex Media Server on an M2 Mac Mini. All devices currently on latest software. Started watching an HDR movie with DTS-HD MA 7.1 at the weekend and it worked perfectly fine. Just gone to continue watching it today (5 days later) and now all the colours are washed out and there’s no audio being passed through. Assuming my Shield has updated to the latest Plex app version and thus encountering a similar/related issue. Checked the Plex Dashboard on the server and can confirm Direct Play is active for local stream, so definitely something to do with the latest player update.

Apologies for the delay in response, was on a work trip.

Thanks for replying, is there any additional information you need for this from us?

It’s a bit unfortunate - since the DoVI profiles no longer kick in, and as I cannot force a DV Profile 5, 6, 8, or 9 to be forced to DoVI Profile 7 (as the option is now removed) I can’t seem to play DoVi properly at all anymore.

As far as I know, no there was not. These issues did not present themselves after the upgrade from: Nvidia Shield - Constant audio desync, video stutters/pixelation/tone mapping issues this post.

So something must have happened between 10.15 and 10.20 to cause this. My guess though, is that quite a few changes have occurred between these versions.

I went through all of my settings today, and noticed that for some reason the HDMI Mode for my nVidia Shield was not set to Enhanced, and wasn’t passing the HDR / DV info on to the TV. Once turning that on - everything seems to be back to “normal”, including the audio desync issues. So that is fun.
