HDR tone mapping on Synology platforms

I would also like to know about the status of Plex inside docker on DSM 7. Are manual edits still required to get hw accelerated HDR tone mapping enabled?

Aye, really would like to know the progress on this too because it is really hard to justify buying a annual or lifetime passes if features are never going to be fixed after they have rushed out. I think Plex needs to halt work on features that have not been released yet and instead hunkers down to concentrate on the features that have been released but are not finished.

So far the following features are released but not finished:

  • HDR Transcoding
  • DVR (No DVB-S or SAP>IP support, almost no DVB-C and DVB-T support)
  • Most players missing the ability to click an actor thumbnail image and show their movies in library
  • Players still don’t automatically know which file to play if different bitrate copies exist (hence why HDR Transcoding unfortunately is needed)
  • Video\Audio hasn’t ever synced up on many Android based devices like (Eg.) Fire TV which I imagine is comparatively massive proportion of their user base.

I mean if we leave it to just those five, it would much better suit the customers that these are fixed instead of using resources to work on something new. Getting the whole product as it is now working is much preferable to ignoring issues and releasing something else in the same half working state then forgetting about that too.

One down (sync → download), 4 to go. Vote for HDR on Synology next XD

Dit it really happen ?
Just installed 1.25.0.5220 and my washed-out HDR movies have their wonderful colors again ?
The release note do state something about “HDR”

Just installed the new version.
Still 4K HDR to 1080p SDR with tonemapping enabled not working.
I have DS1520+ and PLEX manually installed with the officially package from plex.tv

Thining about moving to docker for tonemapping.

Yeah I think I was a bit optimistic ;-(

Is this on DSM 6 or 7?

The problem exists in both versions.
Plex is working on a solution but no ETA yet.

@ChuckPa Any news on this?

No word.

When it is available to test…

I WILL BE VERY LOUD!

Given the time of the year, with all the upcoming holidays and vacations, unless Engineering is holding back a surprise , I’d not count on it before the holidays.

It is a lot of work to get those support packages built and usable on all the different platforms.

Okay thanks!

It’s not urgent because i’m using the docker container right now and that’s wiorking fine.

Just installed 1.25.1.5286-34f965be8.
I can confirm HW transcoding is working with tonemapping enabled now. Great news!
Downside is that it is extremely slow. Transcode cannot keep up with the video. Stuck on buffering every 10 seconds.

Tone-mapping has been working for sometime now, however it’s only software transcoding…at least it still is this way for Synology boxes. I can only manage a video conversion quality from 4k down to 720p (3mbps) without hiccups, with tone-mapping enabled. Any more than 3mbps and there are hiccups. The buffering should theoretically be eliminated on systems that support hardware transcoding, once the drivers have been added to the package. There is a way to get this working with hardware transcoding using docker, however I’m personally forgoing the headache and waiting for it to be supported natively.

Just to add my experience, the most recent release (1.25.0.5282) does seem to at least improve the performance of transcoding HDR sources with tone mapping. It does not appear to be using hardware transcoding, but it feels more usable than it did before. For me, transcoding an HDR source with tone mapping used to peg the CPU totally, but now tops out at about 60% for one stream. So, progress, it seems, but I’m still looking forward to getting the drivers added to the package to take full advantage of the hardware I have and reduce the load on the CPU for this use case.

FOLKS! ------

If you use the Docker container, which will perfectly overlay your existing PlexMediaServer shared folder,

You can have HW tone mapping now.

I know what they’re working on the solution which will work for everyone but don’t know when it will be ready.

By using the Docker overlay now, you can have the functionality without loss of function when you switch back to the native WITH tone mapping when it’s ready.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for all your efforts in communicating to us, and thanks to the devs for trying to resolve this problem (here’s looking at you Synology!).

Is there a guide to setting up the docker instance and a smooth transition away from the native software? I think I saw a guide before and I don’t remember it having anything about Portainer templates.

See FAQ 28.
