Heads up - Generate credits video markers is now live

Plex have rolled out credits video detection today. See for details → https://support.plex.tv/articles/credits-detection.

Its a great additional feature for those who want this functionality. Like intro detection it does come with a cost and is a very intensive operation on your server.

It’s enabled by default OOB and is set to run as a scheduled task & when new media is added. See doc above for details on how to change these if you wish.

So, heads up, depending on your content your server will be busy over the next while during scheduled maintenance completing this activity.

I am so hyped for this. Without a no-effort docker build (I’m lazy), I was forced to sit back and wait for this to go live. Now that it is, yaaaaaay!

I’m surprised by default it does credit detection when media is added. I planned to have it do that anyway, but I thought they were going to set it to “maintenance-only” time, since it’s so CPU intensive.

I had it scan one show (manual analyze per episode) and a few movies. Might just leave the rest for maintenance.

Slightly off topic but technically I find it interesting that plex rolled out this local server feature without me having to update my server. Those settings where not there this morning.

Plex devs had commented earlier that the feature was in previous releases of PMS 1.31.0 but disabled via a feature flag. They’ve only just started enabling that for users (which is why it might not show immediately for all users; if it’s missing you can force that by restarting your server)

One thing I do find odd about it is that even if you have Auto-play on, when you hit “Skip Credits” the next episode doesn’t just start. It then goes to the 10 second timer before starting the next episode.

I wish there was a client or library option to disable the timer when auto-play is enabled, or at least when “Skip Credits” is selected (and there are no after-credits scenes, so the skip goes to the end of the file). The library option would allow it for TV, where after-credits scenes are much less common.

Thanks, @anon5074910 - I will be disabling the feature as I’m one of the few who don’t mind sitting thru (or ignoring) credits. It’s Plex Pass only, and no one I share with who would actually use and want this feature has a pass. A little surprised it’s enabled by default, but it’s easy to disable.

Ah yes, I get it now. As its tied to having a plex pass and the server version plex could control the rollout. Thanks, that makes perfect sense.

Oh. I mean, you can choose not to skip, but I suppose the prompt showing up every time you wish to ignore it would get annoying. I guess I thought it was just going to be such a popular no-reason-to-opt-out feature for everyone to want it.

I don’t normally mind end credits myself, but lately the 5 minutes of dead-silent Netflix dubbing credits at the end of files get on my nerves. When I skip to next episode, that is usually long enough that Plex doesn’t mark the episode as completed, so I need to go in and clean up my “watched” state on the shows manually.

You can also now change the SettingsLibraryVideo played threshold!

Also see the SUPER COOL Video play completion behaviour setting.

Yeah, that went live a month ago. I think I upped the amount from 10% to 15%.

One show I had to stop watching near the end of was marked incorrectly, but other than that I liked the option.

Certainty not everyone. Our family (we use our plex account account as a shared family account) decided to disabled it. Our reasons are not atypical but also not uncommon.

Our son is autistic and was triggered intro skip button and would also be by skip credits. The pop up pick me type skip button was just intrusive for our use case. Fun fact, we are nearly always the last people to leave a cinema as we stay right to the very very end, of the end credits. Much to the annoyance of cleaning staff!

Anyhow, we are certainly glad plex did not just assume it was a no-reason-to-opt-out feature and they provided a way to disable, albeit needing to disable by default. Just wish other features in plex where so easily disabled (looking at you discover credits).

Would love to hear others experience with the feature vis-a-vis CPU types, library sizes etc the way we shared feedback on sonic analysis. Am on the shield tv pro, seems to take ages. Guessing it’ll take months to get through all my media if this is the expected progress.

This sounds like an app setting? Which apps support it if so?

It’s also in the server Library settings!

Clients report their playback status periodically; I assume the server marks things watched based on those status updates. I don’t think clients send a “watched” message, but I haven’t confirmed.

(I’m a little curious why completion played threshold isn’t a user setting.)

Got it. Thought this was the setting to control if the playback windows shrinks on credit detection. I see a feature request coming for this.

Letting it detect the credits has still the benefit that you no longer have to rely on the global playback % threshold for the “watched” status.
The status change can now coincide with the actual end of the video.
My recommendation would be to perform it during maintenance.

Hi @OttoKerner, I wasn’t on the alpha and was expecting to test with beta release, so sorry for providing feedback on the stable release:

  1. Support page for library settings needs update for credit intro and video completion behavior settings. I suggest we have a note similar to video previews which highlights that credit detection is heavy on CPU usage.
  2. Plenty of posts in the forums for the CPU issues, maybe have a sticky announcement on forums.
  3. Default setting should be to run as scheduled task in my opinion so that less of an inconvenience for regular use. Rather than on media addition.

On my oldest slowest server it doesn’t interfere with anything. What problem are you seeing?

What are your specs @Volts ? I’m on Shield TV which is an old processor, anything that transcodes while credit detection is running is BEEP. I had 3 streams 1 of which was a transcode, system couldn’t handle it. Have moved to the latest beta which apparently has some improvement for low power devices, will see how that goes, but if this works anything like sonic analysis may give it a skip for now.

Some improvement on the beta, CPU prioritization much better, no more detection and other processes running simultaneously. Think I also got a lot of cloud-based markers, seems like entire library is now indexed for TV Shows, movies still actively proceeding.
