High CPU usage and Server crashing

Server Version#: 1.25.8.5663 & 1.25.9.5721
Player Version#: NVidia Shield

I have been running my PMS without issue on the current configuration since January 2020. I’ve seen 21 concurrent streams and 8 concurrent transcodes. I recently updated my PMS after probably 3 or 4 months.

Using versions available for the Public & Plex Pass members. With both, I see insanely high CPU usage with 1 or 2 Direct Plays happening. When I downgraded to an older version of PMS, it went right back to never using more than 10% CPU.

After about 30 minutes or so, the server stops responding and I have to reboot the entire server as “sudo service plexmediaserver restart” does absolutely nothing.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700 3.2 GHz 8-Core
RAM: 32GB
Video: GeForce 1050TI

Can you please provide DEBUG logs which capture what’s happening to recreate this condition?

There is nothing immediately obvious for DirectPlay and a DirectStream to consume the CPU as it is.

One thought I do have is the new versions running the background processing and “catching up” on work which should previously have been done.

I am concerned that PMS isn’t stopping on command.

When PMS is running like this, what does top (not htop) show in the default display mode? (which process(es) are consuming the CPU?)

Please also provide the distro and version you’re using?

OS: Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS

How do I get the debug logs?

Hopefully this can be read…

This ZIP file contains the logs I need to see. A screenshot of the activity window is not sufficient. (Attach the ZIP file)

I see you downgraded to 1.24.0.

Did the condition change?

(Still reviewing logs)

I am seeing background deep media analysis running.

Per the logs, are your scheduled tasks (the butler) running (default = 2am → 5am) with the local time showing as 04:25 ?

Deep analysis, without HW transcoding in a Ryzen, will peg the CPU.

Downgrading to 1.24.0 didn’t help, CPU usage is still at 100%

I have a 1050Ti, and HW transcoding has been working just fine (last version I wasn’t having issues with was 1.19

I just woke up and none of my family is streaming (remote or local) but CPU usage is at 100%.

The weird thing, IMHO, some of my family are unable to connect via Roku, Windows, Android, while others can… only since upgrading from 1.19

I’m going to make a bold suggestion.

I make this suggestion because it will definitively determine if it’s the host or PMS.

  1. Notify everyone you’ll be offline a bit
  2. Stop Plex
  3. In /var/lib/plexmediaserver, rename Library to Library-KEEP (don’t lose it)
  4. Start Plex again
  5. Now setup a NEW server with a “TEST” friendly name to avoid colliding with your production server
  6. Load up one section and let it pull all the metadata
  7. Enlist your family to quick check the server and see if it’s working.
    – (they will need to switch to “TEST” server in the player app)

I will give that a shot. It will be a few days, I work from now until Monday.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my post.

I wish I could help more.
I work later hours so if you need help in the evening, don’t hesitate to see if I’m around

it seem that problem of 100% CPU use was never been fixed. its a 2 years old problem. Is plex have good coder to fix thier bug hahaha. 100% use of CPU everyday without using it. i dont watch, i dont add movie, all check is unchecked to do scan of the database. so why it use 100% and why it NEVER end the process ? what the plex server really doing ?

I seem to be having a similar issue on with PMS on my Windows Server. Did this ever get resolved?
