How bad is plex

@cayars said:
jjrjr1, I think you are confusing Plex Pass Features and Beta releases.

PP gives you the ability to also run a beta release before it’s finalized for release status so of course it will tend to have more issues. Nature of the beast. If you don’t want to help find issues or get a heads up on the upcoming release you don’t need to run that release. It’s completely optional.

But that’s an option and not a PP feature. PP features would be stuff such as HOME, Cloud, DVR, Live TV, mobile & cloud sync, camera upload, premium music, etc

Yeah, but that’s the thing… Plex Cloud still has big issues, Cloud Sync generally doesn’t work, DVR still has many bugs going on, LiveTV isn’t supported on many platforms… Premium music, sure, but they still won’t transcode my files to a specific bitrate when streaming remotely so most people can’t use it on their cellphones… Mobile sync works sometimes, but often doesn’t.

@chyron8472 said:
I don’t care about any of those listed features except Mobile Sync. Mobile Sync works fine most of the time, except for certain ongoing issues specific to Android.
I read iOS also has sync issues SINCE RELEASE. I don’t use it though, so can’t comment.

I use iOS … sync doesn’t work most of the times there. (I’d say 3/4 fail, 1/4 success)
Same for Cloud sync to Google drive. Doesn’t work.

I can confirm that. Sync on iOS never really worked. About a year ago there was a period where it was mostly ok, but after some updates in spring/summer 2017 it’s broken again.

The really sad thing is that Plex advertises Plex Pass features like mobile sync, live TV and DVR on Twitter and FB knowing full well these paid services do not work. They are just scamming people.

But they do work for Plex in their testing environments and users that are having troubles are, according to Plex, doing it wrong.

Plex does not believe that users have the intelligence to report real bugs. When bug are reported during beta testing (Plex Pass releases) Plex will only act if the bugs are 100% reproducible in the Plex test environments. It the bugs are not so reproducible then the users are at fault.

Plex NEVER makes mistakes but their users are highly flawed.

Hyperbolic strawman arguments are not needed when it comes to pointing out Plex’s flaws. Yes, they have bugs that persist for years when they supposedly can’t reproduce it themselves, and they commonly blame users for giving not enough data or not the right kind or too-long-log-files, but that doesn’t make their staff egomaniacal narcissists.

No, only their leadership.

Your Plex Pass gives you the right to use their beta software, Nothing More!

Sad but true.

All the features I’m interested in are barely usable:

  • Login: doesn’t work any more on Firefox since about 1 month. Only Chrome works
Working fine for me on two different computers from Firefox. Have you tried clearing the Plex cooking?
  • Playback: I’m streaming to a HTPC with a powerfull NVIDIA card … it transcodes!!!
What app are you running on the HTPC?
What format is the media in?
  • Jumping back/forward: sometimes it works, sometimes it hangs … forever!!!
What app is this happening in?
  • Sync: never ever worked for me without trouble. It’s basically vapourware
I use sync on Android, not iOS so I can’t help if you have an Apple phone but can try to get you someone who can help.
  • DVR: 100% recording bug
This the team is aware of and you will be getting the fixes for this soon.
  • Photos: browse by folder has been removed. Displaying a photo (on a GBit LAN!!!) takes up to a minute
I hadn’t even noticed the folder view is gone. I’ve got mine organized and haven’t needed it. I just sent a message to the devs to ask about this.

I just browsed through several photo libraries in both Chrome and Android and the photos were very quick to display for me. What app are you using?

  • Server load: server never stays idle. There’s always a plex process that utilizes 1 core 100%
You have something running in the background then which could explain some of your issues. Did you recently add or modify libraries? Turn on indexing? What app is using the CPU when you look at the processes running?

I’m certainly not saying you don’t have issues but I’m not and many others aren’t either. I’d like to help you if I can.

Carlo

Thanks Carlo for trying to help, but honestly this should all be addressed and solved already!

All the points I am mentioning above are already raised in the forums with sometimes up to hundreds of posts in the relevant threads. By now the devs should have gigabytes of logfiles and multiple user-reports.

The 100% recording bug alone is open since 1/2 year!
THAT IS, WHAT IS UERS PI****** OFF HERE. … “This the team is aware of and you will be getting the fixes for this soon.” and half a year later there’s still no fix.

Same here https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1370433/#Comment_1370433 logs submitted, tests done at there request, was told “It has been reported and it is on the list of problems to be investigated. It is active and being looked into” literally a YEAR ago.

I did check and the photo libraries do in fact have a folder view in the web browser but it’s not called that. It’s called “Photos” vs “Timeline” or “Album”. I tried this on my photo library and it is there and does work. It’s more advanced then the normal folder view since it supports filtering, etc

Most of the other items you mention do work correctly for me and many others so again I’ll offer to help you with them if you like. Either I’ll help you to get them to work or file bug reports for those not working correctly.

The 100% recording bug in DVR is currently being worked on and tested and everyone will have a new release of that some time shortly.

The WATCHED status update mentioned in the thread above probably lost traction in that thread due to unneeded language. I know I myself would just ignore a thread where someone dropped f-bombs my way. It’s a shame too since you had sa2000 helping you and he is relentless tracking things down.

So if you want to keep things civil I’m here to help where I can, (but I have no iOS/Apples gear)
Carlo

Read again, the thread lost traction because sa2000 lied then abandoned it. His last interaction was his lie on Feb 2017, I posted updates throughout the year and he came back almost a YEAR later on Dec 17 after I tagged him and called him and Plex out on their BS. Then he had the gall to act like he did not know what I was complaining about.

If that is what you call customer service then your company has bigger problems then just not fixing bugs for features that PEOPLE PAY for.

Those are just a few threads out of my comments section. If you would read the forum you would see that users are furious about Plex not having any QA whatsoever!

Sync is broken. Total trainwreck.
Skipping forward/backward causes hangs
A lot of clients (iOS, PMP, …) don’t direct play
Photos is a usability disaster
Server load has “unexplainable” spikes

Bottom line, since years users are reporting bugs, Plex responds “you are doing it wrong”.

If the devs deliberately ignore their users then you can’t expect the language to stay calm.
How do you think the language would be if e.g. Microsoft would ignore their users month after month?

I am at a loss to understand why Plex simply does not get it!!
What would it take to get Plex to pay attention to what is happening here?

Geeesss. They are just plodding along with no guidance, vision, or interest…

Most everyone here knows that I have pretty substantial problems with the direction Plex has taken over the last few years and the FACT that they seem to totally ignore user input unless it agrees with the direction Plex want to go and with the FACT that they continue to introduce features that take away from actually fixing what they already have but I STRONGLY disagree that profanity is at all proper in communication with Plex or anyone else.

Profanity is a mark of immaturity and shows a lack of respect that I, for one, find offensive and it makes it very hard to take the comments of the one using it at all seriously.

If I were discussing a topic and/or trying to help someone and they started cussing at me (or at anyone else for that matter) I would drop any attempt to further that discussion. I do NOT blame Plex or anyone else for dropping discussion in that type of situation.

It is perfectly possible to have a discussion, even VERY heated, without the use of ugly language, God knows I have had them and sometimes I even enjoy them.

Also direct name calling is not acceptable such as calling someone a “slime faced half wit.” Sometime I catch myself falling into that trap and calling someone names and afterward I always regret my behavior and it never results in any resolution to the problem.

If everyone here would avoid the extreme language then, maybe, Plex would be a little more responsive or at least they would not drop threads for having abusive language. Given that Plex ignores many discussions for no apparent reason we should not get into giving them real reasons to ignore threads or stop commenting due to abuse.

No I’m not kidding you. As I said MOST work “for me” and I will offer to help others.

I stand by my statement that most do work pretty well for me. That does not infer it must work for everyone else. Nor does that infer it works exactly how I would have coded it. I spend a lot of time with Plex and know how to set things up to reduce my chances of having problems. Plex is pretty complex and has tons of moving parts and there will always be issues, especially on new stuff.

I find a lot of bugs or issues and report them. As a Ninja I’m fortunate to be able to talk to devs and create bug reports. As a Ninja, I often get to help test new code before it’s released to beta to try and find as many bugs/issues as possible before it’s released as well. I’ve been spending a lot of time doing precisely this for DVR (and a couple of other things) and can’t wait until you guys get the next release of that and see how much better it is.

Pretty much each ninja has parts of the system they are personally vested in. Could be from working with users in the forums, from personal use or for any other reason. We aren’t employees and don’t get to make decisions but we do get to advocate for the users to the staff. I’m without a doubt a power user of Plex and want it to be the best it can be for as many people as it can be.

marcelhehle I’ll take a further look at the threads you listed but did briefly skim through a few of them and see a few commonalities in most of them. I’ll check them out personally as soon as I get the chance.

As an example while syncing of files usually works pretty reliably for me to Android devices (I don’t use iOS) I don’t know if I’ve ever actually checked the server after watching shows/movies on my mobile to see if the watched status got updated. I see this as a common complaint in some of those threads. To me personally, this just isn’t a big deal and I would have never brought it up to the devs or opened a bug report for it. But by getting involved maybe I can recreate it, gets logs and open a bug report (if one isn’t already open, haven’t looked). However just so you know if I see lots of name calling or derogatory name calling or similar in a thread I just pass and move on to the next as I don’t want to get involved in that type of thing. Not enough hours in the day to subject myself to that or jump into the middle.

So again, all I personally can offer to do is help get them to work for you or convey it to the staff via conversation and/or bug reports so hopefully it can get fixed if needed.

Carlo

Plex is turning in to garbage.

Wanna watch a movie after working 21 days straight in a shithole.

Get home can’t cause Plex can’t keep their authentication servers running… Oh yeah and they disabled local authentication.

If your not invested in to the system don’t Find some thing better

I guess if you can log in to use it it’s ok, but given that they’ve forced you to authenticate to an external server that’s constantly going offline there’s no guarantee that you will be able to watch anything.

Even on your own network.

So beware. I coughed up $150 before this external authentication bullshit and now I am unable to watch anything, even on my LAN. when plex.tv servers are down.

So basically, beware.
