How does family connect to Plex?

I’ve had a Plex server for quite a while now. Outstanding question is how does my family log into our plex server to view movies and photos. I’ve added them as “Users” but I do not see anywhere to specify their email address or any type of password. On my son’s laptop I go to plex.tv and there is no option to select a server that I can find. It just says “A server could not be found”. We are on the same home network one subnet so I am stumped as to what is not right.

depends how you have set this up.
if you’re using a Plex Home setup, those users are “managed users”. this means you’ll need to login with your main account. when logging in, each user should be able to assign their own pin code.

if your family members have plex accounts of their own you need to invite/assign them as Friends so they can access your media.

There’s benefits to both scenarios. If you want e.g. your kids to only access your own server and not to to be able to e.g. create a server of their own with their own content hidden from you, your only way is to use Plex Home.

Sorry to hijack this, but how can people in the same house also get the apps for IOS and Android for free? If I use my account, it lets them download it free, but of course I do not want to give out the main account info just to get the apps.

How long does it take for a user to show up on the Plex Home after the invite is accepted?
My wife accepted the invite to my Plex Home (she has her own account) earlier today. The status on the users on the server still shows pending on the Plex Home.

You should see the result pretty much immediately. So in your case you should check if the request really got accepted…

##Pending Invitations
If you’ve sent an invitation to someone else that hasn’t yet been accepted, it will show at the bottom of the page under the Pending header.
