How does Plex decide what to use for HW transcoding if you use CPU with QS in combination with an P2000 GPU

Hello all,

I am planning to build my own Plex server and I am thinking of getting a P2000 GPU with a CPU that supports QS. I plan to run my server on Windows. Before i order my hardware components i want to figure out the following question.

Will Plex initially use the CPU with QS and once it cant handle more it switches to the GPU? The other way around? Or are you able to configure this?

Thanks for helping out.

All depends on your workload.

It will try the primary display’s GPU and then fall back to CPU.

Confining the discussion to Windows 10 1809 and later specifically, you can create a performance profile to direct Plex to a GPU but when it runs out of resources (ram/gpu) it will fall back to cpu.

Some bios’s allow you to change the amount of shared memory allocated to the Intel GPU’s which is important for 4K/HEVC/H.265 material and can be the difference between 2 transcodes and 6. The P/RTX2000 has it’s own dedicated ram and I have seen some wild claims but still ram limited.

if your IGPU is 600 series you should simply try that first and see if you hit any resource limits, before spending a bunch of extra money for a graphics card you may not even need.

plex will use whatever windows has as the primary display adapter.

whether it will failover gracefully to secondary gpu has been subject to questions in past that I haven’t see any confirmed answers.

so, don’t complicate your server until you can determine a specific need to.

Thank you for these answers. I might just start with a server without a dedicated GPU and see if it can handle the transcoding i need, if not i can still buy a GPU and use it as extra capacity.
