How many tvs can use live TV at one time?

I have 1 HuappageWinTV tuner that’s connecting a TV antenna to the cpu running PlexMediaServer.

I’m using 2 TVs each with a Roku box that has Plex app. If live TV is running on one TV the other gets a message saying “All tuners are currently in use”. Is there a Plex restriction that you can only use live TV on one TV at a time?

Not a restriction per say…
Just its one tuner per channel per user.

If you have 2 tuners and one is used for DVR recording then you only have one to use for live TV.

Ok can you help me understand:

If neither TV is recording, should they both be able to watch live TV off one tuner? I tried adding a separate user for each TV and still get the error if they both try to watch live TV even if they are on different channels.

No.

each user = 1 tuner each
each recording = 1 tuner each

if you have 2 tuners, then you can have 1 live tv user + 1 recording
or 2 recordings
or 2 live tv users

if you are live tv with 1 user (no recordings going on), and the 2nd user gets an error, then you will need to start looking at log files to see why.

you can monitor the log files in real time @ Plex > settings > console

you can see when plex is recording easily

if someone is watching live tv, it will show them in the dashboard and it will also show a # in the status circle (just like if someone was streaming a show from your library (not tuner))

Ok so the scenario that I’m trying to get to work is: Live TV, 1 user (no recordings going on) with 2 TVs under that 1 user and 1 tuner. Is that not possible?

The console said “Removed transcode data consumer, active count 2 => 1”

uh no, if there is only 1 tuner, then only 1 thing can use it at a time.

even if 2 tvs are using ‘one’ user, it still requires 2 tuners.

the ‘user’ doesn’t matter.

what matters is the physical number of tuners, and the physical number of streams being used (users/tvs/recordings = 1 tuner each).

if you want to record and watch live tv, or watch live tv on 2 tvs, then you need a dual tuner device. or a quad tuner device.

or you can just RECORD the show with plex, then after the recording is completed, there is no limit to the number of users (other than your server/bandwidth).

I think the confusion is coming in with terminology of user vs. stream.

1 user can have multiple streams going. However, 1 tuner can only feed 1 stream.

Basically you need 1 tuner for every Live TV stream, whether that be for recording something or watching Live TV.

@Robfam

if you need multiple users/tvs/recordings I highly recommend you look into hdhomerun tuner, they have dual and quad tuners for reasonable prices and work well with plex (I have a quad).

the hdhr device plugs into the NETWORK (not a computer) and your tv antenna, so runs independently of a pc.

@Robfam the tuner you currently have only supports one device at a time for either LiveTV or Recording.

Ok thanks everyone! I will look at getting at least a dual tuner. I don’t need 4, so something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GL4VK1H/ref=dp_cr_wdg_tit_rfb ?

SiliconDust HDHomeRun Connect Duo 2-Tuner LiveTV for Cord Cutters (HDHR5-2US)

or there’s a variation that mentions 2 streams on 1 wifi:

SiliconDust HDHomeRun EXTEND.FREE Broadcast HDTV (2-Tuner)

Not sure the difference. Does it matter?

Both of those devices have 2 tuners. The difference is that the Extend can transcode video. If you have a low power Plex server, it could come in handy, but you could save money by just getting the Duo.

Thanks so much for the translation:) I really appreciate all the help!
