How start Plex after reformatting my NAS 003

The name I had given my server is BensPlekz server. That still shows in my desktop app in my Win 11 computer with an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle. My audio and video libraries do not show. They were recently replaced in identical folder names in my reformatted NAS. How shall I get my Plex windows app to see them? Also I have been consuming my libraries on a tablet in the house as well as on an Apple TV and another TV using an Amazon FireTV cube.

FYI to anyone reading this, it is a followup to their previous post here:

They reformatted the NAS, which I think must have deleted the previous Plex server install. I will continue the DM conversation we started here.

Lesson time (again!)

Plex is a program that uses a Client-Server relationship to serve media (You don’t need to read the article unless you want to). This means that you have one device/computer somewhere that has access to all your media (the “server”, that “serves” stuff to others), and a bunch of “client” devices/computers (your phone, TV, web browser, or more) that ask to access the media (your videos, music, pictures). These clients don’t have a direct connection to the original media, but must instead ask the server.

When you load up any client (ideally, use a web browser for now), it asks you to log in. When you do, your account knows where your server is if you have one and connects to it automatically. If you do not, you get a message you see often in these forums:

(Begin summary of last forum post)

All that hullabaloo we did last time was to get the server you had installed on your computer and/or NAS to recognize your Plex Pass. On re-reading your post, you had a NAS named “BemyClo4100”, which I THINK was the name of your NAS, which has Plex installed. You also had Plex on your Windows computer, but that was not what you had configured and it threw us all off for a while until we took that out of the equation. We then worked on the NAS server, but I think you claimed that with a new account, not the one that had the Plex Pass, so we had to work to “unclaim” the server from the new Pass-less account.

(End summary)

So what we need to do now is set up the Plex that I HOPE is installed on your NAS. You need to access it’s web portal at IP-OF-YOUR-NAS:32400/web. I do not know the internal network IP of your nas, so I cannot make you a working link to it, but one thing we can try is to use the name of your NAS instead. If your NAS still has the same name, you can access the Plex server web portal by clicking this link:
https://BemyClo4100:32400/web

If this does not work, then you need to find out the IP address of your NAS and use that. If you cannot get that to work, post the IP here (it will most likely start with 192.X.X.X) and we can tell you what the URL is. As before, don’t be worried about posting the internal network IP of your computers, those numbers are only of use to you and cannot be used by anyone outside your home. For example, my personal computer is at 192.168.0.15, but you cannot do anything to me knowing my IP.

Edit:
Looking up your NAS, you have a WD My Cloud PR4100, correct? If you go to the management page of your NAS, you should be able to see something like this:

If Plex is installed, it should be in your “Installed Apps” section, or you can install it from the App store. This isn’t going to be the most up to date version of Plex, but that is probably okay for your use, and is simpler than keeping up to date by installing the most recent manually.

If you see it there, click on the [CONFIGURE] button on that page.

Yes I am familiar with the ip addr of my NAS. I remember 3 yrs ago installing the previously included Plex app that came with my NAS and I have done some manual updates. I clicked configure. Soon a screen came up saying you did something wrong. The version is 1.40.4.8679

I do not know what to do about that. There is not enough information for me to go on to help you in fixing that error message. Can you show a screenshot of the message, possibly also include the entire screen as well.

The important step here is to run the Plex server app on your NAS, then “claim” it with your account that has a Plex Pass. Once you do that, you can continue to the configuration page where you select your video and music folders.

Have clicked configure in this screen capture video of me doing so Glofwet0178A - TechSmith Screencast - TechSmith Screencast

Okay, I see. The client (the “Plex software” that you swapped to needs to be refreshed. The clients aren’t very good at INSTANTLY recognizing that you have made server changes, so close the app (the “Plex software”, NOT the server) and launch it again, and see if your server shows up under “More”. There are no libraries added yet, so obviously nothing will show up, but your server name should be there.

OKay. It now shows BeMyCloPR4100 which previously I would have called my NAS name. You are teaching me it is my Plex server. The name I changed it to when I had libraries was BensPlekz server which would only show in this Plex software (client). My NAS was still called BeMyCloPR4100 when looked at through the browser

When you go through setup, you choose the server name. It pre-fills that with the name of the computer itself (in this case, the NAS name), but it doesn’t HAVE to be the same name. Some people make up funny pun-names for their Plex server, like “Plex-flix”. The name you pick is what will show up in the “more” menu of your Plex software (client), and it will now show up there for ALL clients as long as you log in with the same username on all of them.

Your Plex account may still think there is an old “BensPlekz” server, but clients will not be able to find it since you formatted it out of existence when you reformatted the NAS. If it bothers you, there is a way to remove an old server from your account, but after re-watching your video it does not appear to show up, so I guess we can forget about that.

So, is everything ok? You can use the [CONFIGURE] button to add new libraries again, point them at the location of your media. You can also now just use your Plex (software) client to do the same thing as well, now that the server is registered to your account.

Edit: Oh, FYI, you can change your Plex (server) name at any time.

Very good answer
