Hi, I just got a new PC today and I’ve gone to Plex and logged in. None of my media is currently available. The same hard drives are there, but that’s fine - I figure I need to re-add the pathways to where my media is stored as I’m on a different device now.
However… I now can’t see anywhere where I can do this. I’ve looked on the Plex page and also Googled explanations for external sites and they all say the same thing - Click settings, then go to the “managed” section and choose libraries (or some such).
I see none of the above. If I click settings then I’m on “Plex Web General” and I see three checkboxes there, but not much else. So I’ve gone carefully through every other tab in the account section and I see nowhere to add libraries.
Am I going mad. I’ve used Plex for many years. I can’t remember exactly how I did this before, but I’ve never had any issue… I hope I’m just being dumb, but I’d be most grateful if someone could help me with what is going on here.
If you setup a new server, make sure to access it through its local IP address / the bundled Plex Web in order to complete the installation.
You cannot initialize your server when going through the hosted version of Plex Web (http://app.plex.tv/desktop)
If you want to move an existing Plex Setup to this new PC you might want to check out this support article:
Many thanks for the reply. I’ve had a little look at the article on moving the installation to another system. It seems quite complicated and implies that I need to have it running on the old PC at the same time. Is that right?
The old PC has died. I’ve moved my hard drives onto the new PC, but now I just need to log in and get access to my files. I’m still not sure how to do this. Do I just need to start again and create a whole new account? That seems like it must not be necessary.
OK I think I’m getting a bit further. I found a place to download Plex, rather than just log straight in. It seems much the same, opening in the browser, but now I see the option to manage and add libraries. So I added a few of my libraries.
Now when I go back to the main screen it seems that I have two users with the same name. One says it’s unavailable (presumably that’s my old PC). The other one just says “there was an unexpected error loading this library”. I’m not entirely sure what that means now.
I do appreciate the info, but it’s really meaning very little to me… I just want to start using Plex again. I never realised that I would need to work through such complexities just to log on using a different computer.
Disclaimer: I’m really not a technophobe. I’m fine with stuff like this. When I first set up / subscribed to Plex I didn’t need to ask anyone’s advice to get it all set up.
But like I say, I thought I was getting there. I’ve downloaded. I thought I was set up. I added libraries. Can I go back to my last question?.. i.e. why does it say “there was an unexpected error loading this library”?
Is there a painless way to do this? I’m starting to lose the will. Can I just delete everything and set it up from scratch? It was not difficult the first time.
