Open using flex for a while and quite enjoy it. And a Mac user and what I have to do is convert files to MP4 and put them into iTunes for Plex to see them. I understand Plex can play MKV files. I’d like to know is how can I set it up so that I can skip the conversion and go directly to Plex and play MKV files.
Thank you,
GJ
There is nothing special to do with mkv files. You have a folder of movies and you create a library and tell it where that folder is.
You can put mkv files into your library just as you can with mp4 files.
…they do not need to be in iTunes to be in a Plex library. In fact I make a point of not putting them into iTunes.
Thank you very much but how do I actually put MKV files directly into Plex?
Not sure how you are defining “directly”
You install the Plex Media Server. then in the server you create a library. in the process of creating a library you tell it which folder you files are.
Like you should have a folder full of movies. when you create a movie library you tell it where that folder is.
you should have a different folder full of tv shows. you create a tv library and tell it where that Tv folder is.
instructions on in the links I provided above
Thanks again I did create a folder with movies and I put an MKV file in there as well as a mp4 movie and only the mp4 shows in Plex folder.
that usually ends up being a naming issue which is mentioned in that second link above for “your media”
If you can tell us the file name and the folder structure we can probably tell you what is wrong.
I have managed point Plex to a folder where I put movies and some home movies but I notice it only shows those that I’ve converted to MP4 and not anything that’s in Mkv.
Something else must be going on as .mkv containers work fine.
Thanks for your input. Any ideas how to address this issue?

Can you demonstrate a mkv file naming? I use mkv containers exclusively without issue on a Mac.
thanks for your interest
here is an ending. -GalaxyTV.mkv
