How to change the server port for Plex?

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

I can’t find the server setting in setting/server/general(or remote access) (as instructed here https://support.plex.tv/articles/200931138-troubleshooting-remote-access/)

How do I change the server port for plex then?
I have the latest plex version from Asustor. I just upgraded because the previous version also didn’t work. It worked a few days ago with port 32400 though.

You cannot change the point used by Plex on the Asustor itself (locally).
You can only specify an alternate public port to be used based on a manual port forward created in your router (routerIP:publicPort → nasIP:32400).

The screenshot implies your server is not yet linked to your account (or you’re using a different Plex account than the one used to claim your server). If you haven’t linked your server, open it through its local IP address from within the same subnet to finish the job. Once this is done you will also see your server using https://app.plex.tv/desktop or other Plex apps.

Yew, my server is no longer connected. It was working fine for months. It was working 2 days ago. Then suddenly it stopped working last night. I did not change any port forwarding settings. So, I know I forwarded my ports correctly. My other apps work just fine, only plex doesn’t.

I was wondering if my ISP suddenly blocked plex port. Because in canyouseeme.org, 32400 is “not seen”. But I am not sure if it “not seen” because the ISP blocked it, or because plex is doing something strange.
Because I have experience where a port for an app is “not seen”, until I actually open the app, then the port is magically “seen” by canyouseeme.org

So, I wanted to try to change port 32400 to something else. I remember there used to be a remote access port setting in plex. Now it is missing.

I tried using http://192.168.100.4:32400 and https://192.168.100.4:32400, with and without /web those also don’t work.

Those two should only work from within your local network (from a client in the same subnet → 192.168.100.x).

If canyouseeme.org cannot see your server, that means something between your ISP and your router isn’t right (potentially including the router configuration). If the router config had been working before and suddenly stopped working, your best shot will be to contact your ISP.
Alternatively you can try changing the public port in your manual port forward to rule out they’re only filtering a specific port / port range (you can try a number of custom ports).

Yes, I tried to check different ports. If I port forward port 8115 for example, it can be seen by canyouseeme.org. So, I want to change plex’s port from 32400 to 8115, is this possible somehow?

If your router supports manual port forwards you can assign pretty much every port. Usual recommendation is to go for a port in the range from 20000 to 50000 to avoid collisions – though if you don’t publish any other services and know ports in the “lower ranges” are not used by anything else you can also use those.

Don’t forget to update the Plex remote access configuration after updating your router’s manual port forward in order to ensure they are in line (Settings > [Server Name] > Remote Access > Manually specify public port)

If you look at the screenshot in my first post, I don’t have this setting ( Settings > [Server Name] > Remote Access > Manually specify public port )

Which is the original reason I started this topic.

I knew I saw it before, but I no longer see that setting now.

Plex won’t even connect to my server. Does accessing this setting require plex to be connected to my server? If it can be connected to my server, then I wouldn’t need to change the port. The very reason I need to change the port is so that I can have plex connect to my server.

Have you maybe signed out your server (this can e.g. happen if you sign-out devices when changing your password) or accidentally removed it from the list of authorized devices?

If your server isn’t linked to your account, you won’t see its configuration from other clients. You should only see it if you’re in the same network / subnet and access it through its local IP → e.g. http://192.168.100.4:32400/web

Some ISPs even sneakily activate CG-NAT on existing customers’ accounts.

I tried:

Where 192.168.100.1 is my default gateway and 192.168.100.4 is my server private IP.

None of them worked.
Strangely enough, my other apps work just fine.
Is it possible that those local IPs also don’t work because the port 32400 was blocked by the ISP?
I don’t believe so right? The 32400 only needs to be open for outside network remote access right? Or am I understanding something wrong?
I also tried restarting my server and my modem, nothing worked.

Ok thanks for all your help guys. I appreciate it.
Apparently, it is a matter of not only restarting my server but actually shutting down the server and restarting it.
Can’t believe it is causing this much trouble.

Hi Guys, Why I can’t have access to the server options? I want to disable the secure connection to have access to my content on another device? Thanks for any help

With that little input I can only guess…
The most common errors preventing you from accessing your server’s settings are:

  1. you didn’t finish the setup and therefore haven’t linked your server to your Plex account
→ open your server through its local IP address to complete the setup (http://127.0.0.1:32400/web if you’re on the same machine; http://[PMS IP address]:32400/web otherwise)
    See: Installation | Plex Support

  2. you did finish the server setup but operate it without linking it to a Plex account. This way you can only access the server through a direct connection; this can also happen if you told Plex to sign-out all devices when changing your password (“all devices” includes your server!)
→ open your server through its local IP address (see above)

  3. you locked yourself out (e.g. because your server was linked to a different Plex account than the one you’re currently logged into).
