How to deal with season/episode name that is actually title of episode?

I have an episode inside “Season 02” in TV type of library, however this one has “Фотография 9x12” in its name, and this throws off the indexer, it creates Season 9, episode 12…

This is a rare condition, is there an annotation I can use on the filename? or something else for this situation?

use the format SxxExx for the season and episode and you don’t need to put the episode title in the file name. putting the episode name in [brackets] might help too.

I like to have the episode titles in the name!
I just tested your suggestion doing [Фотография 9x12] instead, it is still not working :frowning:

S09E12 [Фотография]

or

S09E12 Фотография

Thanks for the replies, it seems that I have failed to explain;
The episode is S02E08, an the episode title, happens to have the string “9x12” in it!

So the algorithm I guess picks it up as episode number… based on your suggestion, I prefixed “S02E08” before the title, and a rescan snapped it back to the proper season!

This is pure luck then and depends on the order of regex in the Plex software.

In case of “S02E08 9x12.mkv” I would consider to leave the title off - just in that case.

This is more of a workaround than a solution… Are you sure it is pure luck? maybe its by design, regex that picks up only the first match?

If not, then a bug needs to be opened to prevent a potential regression in the future perhaps?

I’m no Plex developer but I know Regex. Trust me - it’s no bug because both 9x12 and S02E08 are valid expressions for a season/episode. E.g:

S02E08 9x12.mkv

If you use both in your filename it depends on the order of text processing and the descision Plex developers took. What naming will survive? I guess they work from left to right. But as long you don’t find a statement about that in the naming rules (see link below) the result will be pure luck. In fact none of the words left or right can be found in the documented rules.

You didn’t mention the complete filename you did chose before coming here, would be interesting to see.

Look here for proper naming:

P.S.: The rules say "showname/season nn/showname - SnnEnn.mkv What happens if the show is called 9x12? Would be funny:

9x12/Season 01/9x12 - S02E08 bla.mkv

Sorry, missed the last reply.

Currently the full file name is:
“34 S02E08 Фотография 9x12.mkv”
34 denotes episode number from the beginning of the series, I didnt have time to adjust them per season or remove entirely…

What is the actual show? is it on https://www.thetvdb.com/ ?

Yes, Маша и Медведь - Aired Order - Season 2 - TheTVDB.com
S08E08, although now that I look at the official title, it is not spelled as 9x12, but loosely translated “Photo 9 by 12”, it must have been named 9x12 by whoever I downloaded it from

So I guess not a true case of episode title conflicting with numbering…

The filename should be Маша и Медведь.S02E08.Фотография 9x12.mkv and Plex will always correctly match. Important is just “Маша и Медведь.S02E08.Whatever-you-want-here.mkv”

I actually prefer to keep S02E08 in front, so filenames are ordered correctly when sorted by name.
Thats also good?

No. But if you have the Show name first and then S02E08 the files still ordered correctly when sorting by name.

Not good enough for me, I don’t want to just rely on Plex or the likes for metadata, sometimes especially when its not working and I access directly by files, its good to see episode names, to know which one is good watch…

he was only speaking of you saying

if you have the show name in the front like the naming guide says with the s02e08 after it then it will stay in that same order since the show name would be the same in all files, regardless of the episode name being at the end or not.

You can use Маша и Медведь.S02E08.Фотография 9 на 12.mkv

The sorting by name will be correct, Plex can handle it perfectly and you know the name of the episode if you access the files directly.
