How to Disable Audio Subtilles from Coming up as Default

Hey Guys,

After months of painstaking troubleshooting, I am still experiencing issues with Subtitles populating as a default. Every video content that I open up show the subtitles open initial launch, then I have to disable the subtitles manually. I opened up a ticket regarding this issue a few months ago, originally thinking this issue was only related to my Samsung Smart TV. However, I am still seeing this issue across all my media streaming devices (Roku, Logitech GTV, Nexus Player, Sony GTV, Amazon Fire, and ADT-1). So this obviously is affecting my account even though I have checked all settings in the Plex Dashboard to not pull up subtitles.

Any help would be appreciated in getting this fixed. It is annoying to have to manually disable subtitles every time I launch a brand new content.

Settings - Server - Languages - Subtitle mode = ‘Manually selected’

I have attached a screenshot of my settings. What you will see is the “Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks” is checked. However, it was not checked prior to my responding to this post. That said, should checking that box make a difference if I had it set to manually selected for the past few months I have been experiencing this issue?

Do you use any agents to download subtitles automatically?

Also, does the Audio track show something like English (DTS 5.1) or UNKNOWN (DTS 5.1) ?

UPDATE: It appears that checking the box DOES NOT make a difference. This is not inherently intuitive based on the statement below the checkbox** “Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks in your preferred language when possible.”**.

I would think an end-user would reasonably infer that by checking the box, that audio and subtitle tracks will automatically populate once the content is launched. In addition to that, the **auto-select subtitle menu **will allow the end-user can choose whether the subtitle auto populates or whether they want to select from x number of choices.

All of that said, maybe this is something for the designers to consider greatly. If the **Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks ** is unchecked and the Subtitle mode is set to manually selected, Plex should behave the same was as if that box was checked. More importantly, if that box is unchecked, one should reasonably infer that Plex will not automatically launch Subtitles even if the Subtitle mode was set to automatically.

Thus, this current menu navigation section is totally confusing. Now that I have only checked that box per my attached screenshot, the subtitles are still populating by default. I just makes no sense that I even had to check that box to begin with. If the box isn’t checked, it is reasonable to think Plex should NOT automatically do anything. Is my thinking not rationale and the current Plex choice selection for this field is confusing? If so, does this need to be clarified or modified by Plex engineers?

Can anyone help with this? This issue is still on-going and makes no sense.

  • Are you using any agent which is downloading subtitles automatically?
  • What is the version number of your Plex server?
  • On which platform does it run?
  • Do you use several different Plex users with your server? Are your clients using a different Plex account than you as the admin?
  • May I see the mediainfo XML of one of the movies which is affected?
  • What happens if you Plex Dance one of the affected movies?

I had this issues a little while ago. It was affecting my Xbox more than anything else. I had to restart both my PMS machine and my Xbox a couple of time before it went away.

Though I haven’t seen too many other posts - which makes me think this is uncommon
