How to get Album Reviews working

Upgraded to Plex Pass yesterday, created a new Library for music. Unfortunately there are no Album Reviews fetched from Gracenote.

I saw several issues with the same problem but with no solution.

How to get this working?

Hi trumpy81,

Thank you for your exhaustive explanation, much appreciated.

I understand that incorrect naming and tagging could be the problem.
Also, I can imagine not every album would have a review.

However, I have over 4.000 albums (not a collection of tracks) in my Library and most of them (+ 90%) are corrected - if necessary - with MusicBrainz.

I checked the “Use embedded tags”, this was switched off, I turned it on. Did a re-scan of the Library, but with no luck.

There is no setting to turn on the reviews?

I’m curious how to get it working so I get what I pay for and what is advertised with.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Thanks again Andy,

MusicBrainz can be a pain in the **** indeed to make it to work, but as far as I can see and checked it did a good job correcting & adding tags.

Did all the steps, but it din’t work out, unfortunately.

Because Plex is advertising with this as:

about
Premium Music
Manage your music with song identification via audio fingerprinting, get world-class album reviews and artist bios, as well as the best cover art available.

&
Lyrics
See timed lyrics to your favorite songs when available.

Instead of “when available” with Lyrics, Plex recommends Premium Music with world-class album reviews, so I assume a substantial part of my Library serves reviews.

About the lyrics, sorry about the misunderstanding, there’s a sentence missing. Everything works, except album reviews.

What I ment to say is Plex is advertising about lyrics with “a reservation” (when available) and with reviews not. This creates expectations to me (and should work out of the box, I use Roon as well and there I find the reviews, when available).

I know the importance of tagging, I would like to emphasise: as mentioned before, almost every album is correctly tagged with musicbrainz (also the tag album artists is available).

In the log files I can’t find anything which leads to reviews.

Thanks again Andy.

Looking for clues, in the log files. But I can’t find something useful, at least to my eyes.
There is nothing written about Album reviews. I’lll take a look again later this week.

OK Andy, thanks for the info!

Just took a look at your answer again if there are any updates and I saw “but I have no idea if/when a fix will be implemented”.

When seems reasonable to me but if?

When I pay for a service I expect it will be fixed within a reasonable timeframe.
If not, it feels as a disdain for their customers to me.

For now I will suspend my subscription.

I deleted and added back my music library recently and all the reviews are gone. Any word when the issue with displaying reviews will be addressed?

Just had a chat with an employee about this issue, it seems there may be a bug that is preventing album reviews from being displayed.

The reviews appear to be downloading just fine (so no error info in the logs), but they are not being displayed in Plex for some reason. The devs are looking into the problem, but I have no idea if/when a fix will be implemented.

Hahah it’s been a bug for so long that I thought the feature gone…

+1 would love more of this rich metadata type stuff to make it into plex pass.

I’m a little annoyed that its listed as a feature yet doesnt work and (according to the rest of the internet) hasnt for ages now.

I wish Plex would open up their web api and support plugins. all these issues are getting so old and just annoying to deal with. We in the Plex Pass community could easily tackle all these small issues and submit fixes and plugins regularly for review.

anyway, i used LastFM, Pitchfork and Webhooks to create a custom “now playing” endpoint. That lets me customize my Plex experience more to my liking. Plex Inc. could easily add a similar feature, but they wont. Also, if metadata is your thing, there is a much nicer application called Roon. Its a little pricey, but its the best.

I am new to Plex and plan to predominantly use it for music. I purchased a lifetime pass for the same reason last week.
I have been trying to find out what possibly could have gone wrong that I do not see no difference between a regular music library and a “premium” music library. I stumbled upon this thread!

While we have been trying to justify the importance of album naming and possibility of data not being available with Gracenote; few questions pop in my head:

  1. Irrespective of incorrectly named files, Audio finger printing should take care of correctly cataloging my tracks and albums thereof.
  2. If Gracenote does not have data for 90% (in my case 100%) of albums then, Plex should consider moving to another service.

Now about the bug:-

  1. I guess other than ill-aligned poster at the top, I do not see nothing new in the premium library. The album reviews, the background, enhanced bios - I do not see nothing new.
  2. Contrary to explanation earlier in this thread, the album reviews are not being displayed because they have NOT been downloaded at all. If you manually edit any album, you would see a text box for review. Its blank. Fill it with your own review; and pop it appears just below the album description on the client.
  3. Plex team which is doing a laudable job with this fantastic software must be busy with other important feature development which is why perhaps this is taking longer to fix. However, calling it a bug would over-simplifying it. It is a missing feature which fell through the cracks in-between releases. Its not a bug. It should be addressed on priority via a patch release and in the meantime temporarily edit Plex website off this feature.

I am hoping somebody from Plex dev team finally responds to this unnecessary thread and puts a closure.

Regards.

They should take most of the features off the Plex Pass section of the website since they only develop a feature up and to beta release and then let it languish, never to be touched again.

You bought a Plex pass, I bought Sonos over other speakers because I Plex advertised Sonos integration. Sadly, the Sonos plugin isn’t feature complete, much less quality tested as it only connects and stays connected half the time you use it.

My advice is to get acquainted with really, really long-term disappoinment and piss poor customer support if you’re planning on sticking around.

Any update on album reviews showing? I bought a plex pass and this is one feature I was looking forward to and nothing…

I used to have extended band bios and album reviews showing a few months ago, now just the standard ones and no tour info. I have deleted my library, uninstalled Plex and recreated my premium music library multiple times and I just don’t get the extended information anymore. I do get song lyrics showing however. Incredibly frustrating!

Roon collects all this and more. Even falls back to Wikipedia when nothing else is found. Plex is stretched too thin and just cant keep up.

I just looked them up. Looks like a slick setup.

My biggest beef with Plex is just that they are advertising features that simply don’t work. It is like buying a car with power locks and windows, but after you pay for it GM come back and says, yeah we haven’t quite got the power options figured out yet… so you are stuck with manual…

AT LEAST DONT ADVERTISE IT IF IT DOES NOT WORK. AM I ASKING TOO MUCH? I guess I am yelling since it was in CAPS.

Yeah, it’s really just sad though. I was with Plex way back in 2010 when they basically just had a movie scraper and it barely worked in a browser. So to see how far the server has come is amazing. But ever since they got their venture capital, they’ve basically just been throwing stuff together and none of it is finished or working well.

Here in Saudi, my sim doesn’t get reception half the time and Sync to mobile just doesn’t work. Which is critical to my setup. It just hangs at 97% complete then dies.

But mainly I want them to focus on proper photo library management and re-engineering their Music discovery dashboard and algorithms.
I never thought I’d have to ask Plex to scrape metadata, but apparently that’s not what they do anymore either.

Ha, found some old screen shots of that original plex scraper!
You couldn’t even play your movies in the browser at that point. I had to map all of my movies with some JavaScript video player I hacked in.

I guess, the point, if there is one, is that we always used Plex first and foremost for the metadata! Everything else came second to the info. Time to take a step back and focus on the core experience, Plex.

You already lost me to Roon for music. Wonder who will come along and deliver the final blow?

@trumpy81 - is there any chance we can get an update on this issue please, even if it’s just to say that album reviews are likely to stay broken for the foreseeable future? As many other users have pointed out reviews are still being advertised as a premium feature and I used to really enjoy reading them while browsing my library. Now my only option is to copy-paste from somewhere like AllMusic or Pitchfork.

Any further information you’re able to provide on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
