How to get Remote Access to work (trying again)

I have a previous thread here - How to set up remote access
documenting where I tried once before to set up Remote Access so I can “share” my Plex with someone outside my home. The thread closed from inactivity so I am starting a new one.

I just reread the thread and wondered if setting up a bridge on my router is an option? And if so how do I do it?

Did you contact your ISP for a static IP?

Based in that last thread it looks like you are in a CGnat situation and need to contact your ISP.

We could validate that again if you want.

I did contact them. It is $10 a month and I haven’t decided I want to do that. I don’t have enough upload speed for others to view my movies remotely. I just want them to be able to search my libraries so I can loan them a movie.

I thought the last point in that thread discussed making a bridge and that that might be a way around my problem? Sorry I know little about networking and isps and may be misunderstanding.

Thank you for your patience and help.

I would think that Plex relay service would work even with your cgnat situation.

Is that not the case?

I don’t have any clue about these things but would be willing to try if you can guide me through the process.

Thanks again!

Well the relay should just work but show an indirect connection for remote users.

What happens when you try to access your Plex server remotely?

I don’t know what happens. I have had others try it in the past but with no success. I am not sure what they saw. I can never get “Remote Access” to be enabled. And I know in the past I tried the website to test who can see me. I don’t remember how to do that.

You don’t need remote access to work for the relay.

Use your cell phone and go to app.plex.tv while on cellular data or with a laptop when you are not at home and see what you get.

It says, “Limited Connection - Linda’s Plex”
“you are not connected directly to Linda’s Plax so streaming quality may be limitied. You may be able to connect directly to this server by changing your home network settings.”

Ok cool so that works…

That is what your remote users will see unless you pay for a private IP from your ISP.

They can see all your content and stream and at limited bandwidth.

Ok. I used share to send a movie to someone and they got a message saying there was a problem accepting the invite (when they tried to accept it)

I tried adding a friend via users & sharing. I put in my daughter’s email. She tried to accept the invite and got a screen saying, Hmm, an invite error.

Does she have to have a Plex account. I read that she doesn’t but I’m wondering.

So sorry I don’t use sharing myself but I do know there are 2 kinds of sharing.

1 if you setup a Plex home but this requires a paid Plex pass and users login with your account, this is meant to share with family members usually in the same household. Kind of like Netflix where you can create a profile for users under your account or everyone can just use your main profile.

2 you share with a friend and that means your friend needs to have their own Plex account independent of your account.

Do any of the people you are sharing with have their own Plex account?

It is family but not in my house. They don’t have an account. We will try that.

Yes sharing as a friend your friend needs their own account.

Ok. She has signed in and she is using the mobile app. It says “Hmm, an invite error. Sorry, an error happened when accepting the invitation.” Should I start a new thread? LOL

Yeah try this thread for a solution

If not I’d suggest you start a new thread with the subject related to sharing not remote access.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

The solution in the thread worked. TY
