Server Version#: 1.23.6.4881-e2e58f321-x86_64_DSM6.
Player Version#: where is it?
Whenever I download movies from the plex server running on my DS1520+ to my iPad, it typically takes 30 minutes even for the smaller movies. Why does it take so long? Is there anything I can do to speed that up?
Are you using the „old“ mobile sync feature or the new download preview version?
Mobile Sync will always create an optimized version of your movie. Given this is a NAS, having it transcoded and transferred in approx. 30 minutes isn’t all bad. To significantly improve this, you’ll need to run your server on a more powerful platform.
The new download feature will try to use the file as-is — if it’s compatible with the client or unless you ask it to create a lower-quality version. If a transcode is required, this will be comparable to your mobile sync experience. If the file is only downloaded as-is, the only limiting factor is your network speed… given this is transferring your files through WIFI, try to avoid major interferences like walls, furniture, distance… between your router/access point and the iPad.
The mobile sync feature. Where is the new download feature located?
Wifi isn’t the problem as I can download a simulate movie from Amazon or Netflix on just a few minutes over the same wifi link.
I’ve tried it on the ipad, the download isn’t that much faster than sync, and you need to enable the download feature in order to make it available. When download is enabled though, it’s hard to find the movies that were already downoaded via sync. It’s very confusing they way they implemented it. I’ve deleted the Plex app and all data, reinstalled it and re-downloaded a few videos via the download feature.
