I have episodes of a show that show up as individual movie titles instead of episodes of a show

It is a foreign show which is probably why it wasn’t classified as a TV show instantly like other shows I have uploaded, but I’m not sure how to label them so I can have each season with one thumbnail, in the TV show section, or in the worst case just be under one thumbnail with the ability to see and select different episodes after the initial click.

I’ve read around but I can’t find an answer. Any help would be appreciated as it really clogs up my library and makes looking through content kind of a pain.

I had a similar issue with a show that had episodes show up in the movie library, but I just selected them and merged them and they went to the tv section, but for whatever reason, this show refuses to do the same.

Plex Media Server version?

Plex is picky with TV shows. Follow Plex’s naming & organization requirements as close as possible.

Please share how you have the files organized and named, including file extension (.mkv/.mp4/etc). A directory listing, screenshot, etc.

Movies and TV Shows must be kept in separate directory structures and separate libraries. Do not point a movie library at a directory with TV shows or visa-versa.

Can you please show a screenshot of what you mean. TV libraries can’t display things as movies. What show is it?

ok, let me explain. When i first moved everything onto plex I had a full season of Archer downloaded, I downloaded them one by one as they became available from different sources. They all showed up in my movies library. But when I selected and merged those episodes they vanished from the movie library and showed up where they are now in the TV library and I can click on it and choose which episode to watch.

But when I try to do that with Ranma 1/2 it does not act the same way.

If I’m understanding what I read from that link I should type out in the sort title

Ranma 1/2/Season 1a/Ranma 1/2 – s01e1.ext

for each episode and it will reorganize into the format Archer did? Is that right?

It was Archer. but once I merged the individual episodes it instantly went to the TV library. But earlier i had all 130+ episodes of Ranma 1/2 clogging up my movie library and I’m trying to work that into something more manageable and functional

Use Season 01 not Season 1a.
Use two digits for the episode number: s01e01, not s01e1.

Please show your directory structure for the library. As mentioned, you cannot mix movies and TV shows in Plex.

it sounds like you have everything on one big folder and made both libraries point at the same folder. as fordguy mentioned above put movies in one folder and tv shows in another. each show should have it’s own folder in that. and each episode file of a show needs the S01E02 notation.

Where do I type that? Do I edit it in the sort title or main title on Plex, or do I edit the actual file name?

I didn’t have a directory structure (that I know of), I just synced my NAS and everything was all over the place so I merged some episodes and then they vanished into my TV library and others didn’t. I’m not sure why it worked with some but not others. I haven’t really organized it manually in any certain way up to this point. other than playing with the sort title, but I’m not sure how to test if that was working

That’s the weird thing. Archer was set up with each episode in it’s own individual folder because that’s how I downloaded them and added SRT to. But Ranma came in one big file (per season) with all the episodes inside.

I didn’t purposefully make the libraries point at the same folder. Everything that happened did so without me really doing anything other than selecting and merging

This works on my system.

The directory has only TV shows. No movies.

Each show in its own folder and a subfolder for each season.

Leave the “1/2” off the file name. Plex should still match it OK.

/A TV Show Library <-- TV Library points here
../Ranma
..../Season 01
....../Ranma - s01e01.mkv
....../Ranma - s01e02.mkv

ok, so I’m editing the actual file name and not the sort title, right? That would probably be easier than having to edit every single sort title anyways.

Its ok if I leave the title of the episode in the option info since that doesn’t effect sorting, right??

That makes sense because each episode of Archer was in it’s own folder and I think it had S00E00 in each file name. So that’s probably why it worked out that way.

stupid question. do I literally type “A TV show Library” at the front of every file, or would “TV Show” suffice?

You MUST have TV shows and movies in separate directories. This is not an option.

Based on the information provided, it seems you have not done so.

  1. Read the Plex documentation on how to organize your media.

  2. Re-organize and rename your media files accordingly.

Try this:

  1. Make a new directory structure, such as
/Media
../Movies
../TV Shows
  1. Create a new TV Show library and point it at the new TV Shows folder.

  2. Rename a TV show according to Plex specifications provided above.

  3. Move the TV show files into the new TV Shows folder.

That is an example. Name it whatever you wish.

Ok, I get it. It’ll take some work but I think I understand how to make it work now. Thanks a ton

This is an example what folder my Tv library is pointing at and of my Game Of Thrones files

oh, I see. So it doesn’t have to have the full word “season” in there. as long as it’s in the S00E00 format that’s what the system reads. Got it.

Thanks again

The work you put in up front will save headaches down the road.

Take a look at Filebot, https://www.filebot.net/. It can help if you’ve a lot of movies/shows to rename. It has templates that conform to Plex naming requirements. I do not use it, but those who do swear by it.

Don’t hesitate to post on the forum if you run into any issues. Plenty of folks here willing to help.

renaming the file worked like a charm, only it doesn’t list the episode name under the thumbnail, how can I fix that?
