Hi. I have all of my Home Movies on a NAS server. The movies are sorted into separate folders with names like ‘1995’ and ‘1996’ on the NAS. I would like to open the Home Movies library on Plex and see the folders, not the files. That way, if I want something from 2001, I can look within that folder first.
Currently, I see ALL of the movies sorted alphabetically. It is the same if I choose the Movies sort in the dropdown or if I choose Folder.
Have you added the per-year folders directly to your library or their parent folder?
Switching the library into folder-mode seems to be doing the job for me (showing the content of the library folder(s)… e.g. subfolders by year or individual movies which are directly located inside a library folder).
This is an “Other Videos” library, right? If so, good start. (Movies libraries will screw up the files as Plex attempts to match these files against online movies)
Make sure you are in Library view, not Recommended. Then, click the Movies dropdown in the upper left corner, next to the All drop down. Choose Folders. This gets you to a list view of your folder structure, allowing you to easily browse your files based on structure, not Title, which is default.
Edit: Shoot. You got it all right, except that you are adding each year as a different source. This prevents you from browsing by folders, since it pulls the contents of the source folders and makes THOSE the root of the folder view. Remove those two 1996 and 1995 sources, and just point this library at the Z:\Home Videos
uh, maybe this is not an “other videos” library because I do see Plex assigning other movie names to my videos. So, either I can change the library type to “other videos” (which I haven’t found how to do yet), or I delete the library and start again. I’m not in too deep yet, so not much would be lost by deleting, I think.
regarding removing the two folders and just taking the whole Z:/Home Videos folder… I think I tried that originally and I didn’t see the folders so I stopped the library from being populated, deleted, and did it this way. Why? I have a LOT of videos and I didn’t want it to spin all night to find out I did it wrong.
So thank you divideby0. Maybe I should delete this library, recreate it as ‘Other Videos’ and create the library from Z:/Home Videos. Does this sound like a feasible plan?
Sorry I took an hour to reply. Yeah, looks like to change the library type, you must create a new library. Make sure it is an “Other Videos” library, not “Movies”. In Movies, Plex will try to match the file name against online lists. This is the whole point of “Other Videos”, it respects your filenames, since they are more for home videos like recitals or other stuff (I put my Drone video recordings )
I’m curious why pointing the library at the “Z:\Home Videos” root didn’t work for you before, but if you were in a Movies library, anything can happen? *shrug*
Thank you. Don’t know why it didn’t work before, but it seems to work now. Maybe it was the “Other Videos” ‘hack’ (lol). But, I deleted the library that I started and just pointed to “Z:\Home Videos”. Folders galore!! I am guessing that it will look like this from my TVs around the house. Love it.
