How to split TV shows

I fail to see how to split a TV show or movie. This article: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201018248-Merge-or-Split-Items, indicates to “Open the Merged Item details view” and click the ellipses and choose Split Apart, but this option is not there. I have episodes that are screwed up because Plex merged things it should not have.

How?

‘Split’ is only available at the top level. Not for single episodes.
All these issues can be solved (and avoided) with proper file naming and folder organisation.

  1. Look up your show on TheTVDB
  2. Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
  3. Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases.
  4. Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title - s01e01 - additional info.ext (’- additional info’ can be left out)
  5. After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.

Thank you; however, what I do not quite understand is meta data may be added to the files themselves (like using MetaX). Why does Plex not read that information?

Plex does only read embeded meta data from .mp4 or .m4v files.

And it only does this when the file is scanned the first time. If you add meta data after a “mismatch” it won’t change any thing. In such a case you need to perform the Plex Dance

im running plex V1.7.5 .4035 on QNAP NAS and I have to concur with Kenneth that there is no longer an option for splitting TV episodes. I use Ivi on mac to create M4V files but some tv shows have names like xxxx(1) and xxxx(2) as seperate episodes. Plex merges these into one episode. I need a way to seperate these please.

Another thing to remember if you have mp4 files you may need to remove any metadata aswell to correct your naming issue.
