I’ve just tried to split apart two files from a TV Show that Plex has merged together but noticed that the fix match, unmatch, merge and split apart options in the menu are now missing - last used it a few months ago but now I can’t find it so I presume they were removed in an update to the server. Anybody got a workaround for this?
These actions are only available for a whole show, not for single episodes or seasons.
Mismatches in TV show libraries are solved best by adhering closely to the naming guidelines. https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/
Thanks, I only just now realised that I could only do it for the whole show and not individual episodes - is there no way of splitting apart two episodes that Plex has wrongly merged? Thanks for the link about naming, will try that and see if it fixes it but the issue seems to be that the name of the two episodes are the same except for part 1 and part 2
Please tell which show it is and how the actual file names are for these episodes.
There can be subtle differences with how these episodes are listed on TheTVDB.com and TheMovieDB.org, which is where Plex is drawing its metadata for tv shows.
Thank you,
The show is Just Shoot Me!
S05E12 The Proposal (Part 1).mp4
S05E13 The Proposal (Part 2).mp4
I removed the word part in the brackets, unmatched the whole show and reran the metadata and it has fixed the issue
Thank you for your help!
Do you think they will ever change Plex so you can merge and split apart at the episode level?
Ah, this is running into a special “feature” of Plex, where it will silently and automatically combine files if you use a magic keyword in the file name. For movies or episodes that are split among multiple files, Plex will automatically merge them into a single entry with no option to split apart the files afterwards. You must avoid the keywords seen in the “naming your TV Shows” article linked by Otto earlier. If my web magic worked, this link ought to go straight to the part of the page that defines the feature. If not, use the Table of Contents on the right to click on Episodes Split Across Multiple Files entry.
It claims to need to use specifically “PartX”, but it appears to also trigger on “Part X”, note the space. Strange that this triggers on files that are not otherwise identical in name, since your episode NUMBERS are different…
Anyway, the name scheme for a multi-part episode on TVDB and the like is S05E12 The Proposal (1), with only the part number in parentheses. Using that ought to fix it.
Edit, as it has been solved already: I would like to see the ability to over-ride this merge option. Using Split apart on an episode should be allowed.
