I have a NVidia Shield running Plex Media Server fed by a Synology DS718 NAS. It was running fine for a year until I got a security notification in my Synology center that said I should not have the default admin username out there. So I updated this, which of course broke the Plex connection on Nvidia Shield - doh.
Plex app on Nvidia does not readily give you place to ‘update credentials’ for database connection to NAS, so I immediately went back to NAS and changed Synology login credentials back (re-added “admin”). This did not fix problem. When I try to load TV show it can’t find it.
I tried un-installing Plex & re-installing. This did nothing as Shield apparently stored app data in memory. I tried performing a factory reset of Shield.
This took 8 hours for a Shield with nothing other than Plex app to reset. However when it came back, it did not actually reset. The Shield still knew my wifi and still had Plex & server auto-loaded when I rebooted; I didn’t have to enter anything. In fact when I came back the second time, now I have TWO plex media server instances running. Cannot remove the second which contains nothing, and the first is still broken but I cannot edit it or try to fix. It’s like I made the problem worse.
Does anyone know how to fix this? I have restored the default admin credentials on Synology, I can ping the network location, I can watch files over the network from the NAS on any device without using Plex. It’s clearly isolated to the Plex configuration and/or the Shield. But I can’t figure out this Shield or Plex. I only use the Shield for Plex so I’m open to completely resetting the Shield (I can’t figure out how).
Thanks!
Server Version#: v1.23.1.4571
Player Version#: ? Whatever is on NVidia Shield Android Store
The Shield comes with older versions of the Plex client and server apps pre-installed. You need to update them through the appstore before continuing.
However, resetting the Shield should have reset these to the pre-installed versions with nothing setup.
Was that the server app or the client app? I think you were doing the client app, which wont reset the server.
You may be seeing the pre-installed PMS. Resetting the Shield won’t tell Plex that you removed the old server so it will still be shown but will be unavailable. Use Plex Web, goto authorized devices, find that server, and delete it. Or maybe delete all your Shield servers and start again.
For accessing your Synology, I’m not an expert so I don’t know for sure, but it’s possible they don’t allow using the admin account anymore. Go ahead and add your new login like you did before. Then on the Shield, you’ll need to mount/remount the connection to your Synology. This may be all you needed originally, but we won’t know.

Done! This was news to me, but I realized this during my troubleshooting.
I did uninstall both the Plex and Media Server apps. I had to go into system apps to find the Plex Media Server app to uninstall it. One weird issue is the Plex Media Server app does not appear to uninstall from the Shield even when I select uninstall from the system. Witness screenshot below on my 3rd attempt to re-install: https://imgur.com/a/EjEUjxL
What I found is what you guided in instruction. I needed to remove the servers from the Plex web app itself. Thank you so much for this instruction, it did not occur to me that this control was set at this level. I have gone through and re-set all my libraries from the Plex web app and removed the older settings.
I am going to wait for the Plex dance to occur and see if this resolves my problem.

Yes, that’s what I was wondering but there is no place on the Shield to modify the access credentials to the Synology NAS. This is what tripped me up when I made the change originally. I think I’ll just leave it alone if I get it working again.
Uninstall PMS (not just on the Shield, but everywhere) does not remove the server from being linked to your account. This allows you to reinstall PMS and have it act as the old server if you wanted. There’s a trick to doing this, but it is possible.
I don’t think you can change the credentials. you need to unmount and mount it again.
