I messed up with the DSM7 Installation

Server Version#: DMS 7.0.1-42218
Player Version#: 1.21.0-3744

Hello there,
I’ve read the instructions… unfortunately I did this after I upgraded my NAS to DMS7. I know… I messed up at several points. I did the DMS update without doing anything to PMS. After the update Plex wasn’t running anymore. Now I did already uninstall it, restarted the Server, changed PlexMediaServer’s permissions for Plex and Media folders. Installed Plex again and tried to run it… still ‘manually’ stopping. I’ve noticed that there occure problems with versions older than PMS 1.24.2.4973. Do I have any options at this point to get plex to run again? Would a DMS downgrade be a suitable solution or just the next mistake? Should I backup the Plex folder?

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Cheers,
Adrian

Do you still have your metadata in the ‘Plex’ shared folder ?

DSM can never be downgraded. Synology prevents that.

yes there are around 150gb of metadata in the Plex folder. Movies and series are in another folder

Excellent.

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 package version – ERASE radio button
    – This removes the bad data 1.21.0-3744 wrote

  2. Pick any version higher than 1.24.2.4973 (current Public 1.29.0 works fine)

  3. Manual install it

  4. It might start migrating
    – Either sit there ‘installing’ (which is where it will stay until all data migrated)
    OR
    – It will give errors about permissions with the final message providing instructions.

  5. If it very quickly installs (meaning it latched onto something else bad)
    – Confirm you still have your data in the Plex shared folder
    – Uninstall with ERASE one last time

  6. Now it will attempt to migrate on this next package installation.

It worked! thank you very much!

You found the new shared folder PlexMediaServer ?

  1. Don’t put any media in there… permissions are fragile in DSM 7
  2. You can use the old “Plex” share anyway you want or delete it too
  3. Old “Plex” user isn’t needed anymore. You can delete it too
  4. Everything is now: PlexMediaServer
