I really F'ed this, and I need to totally nuke and can't find a clear answer

Server Version#: synology 1.25.9.5721-7000
Player Version#:

OK, So, i have to preface this by saying i’m a totally average intelligence user, I got this synology mainly for work and sharing video assets among multiple computers. It’s worked great, so back on dsm6 I set up my plex server on it. Couple clicks, went super easy, I never ever thought about it.

Did the DSM7 update. Didn’t know/read anything before indicating there would be problems. There were problems. As it stands now, I can’t really do much of anything. I’ve managed to delete my plex media server, and i manually cleared out the Plex and PlexMediaServer folders on my synology, but the root folders are still there and I can’t delete them. My Plex Web App is blank, but now it won’t even show me anything under my user name indicating “you don’t have access”.

Need a full cleanse here. Content is fine, it’s all on the synology drive, just not really sure what to proceed with. I’ve looked through a ton of help articles, but i just seemed to have screwed up just enough pieces of all of it that they’re not really helping.

I need to ask some basic questions:

First and foremost : Do you still have Library/Application Support/Plex Media server in the Plex shared folder ?

Second: During the upgrade, which migrates data from DSM 6 layout to DSM 7 layout, Did you interrupt it / have it stop or did it complete normally by itself ?

Lastly , If this isn’t a simple Permissions problem AND If the DSM 6 server data can be recovered, would you like to recover it or do you wish to start over ?

  1. No
  2. Completed normally without issue
  3. My library is so small really I’d just prefer to nuke it and start from scratch.

Since posting I was able to uninstall and reinstall, I’m able to log into plex now to see other shared servers again, but I have no way of making a new one. I’m expecting it is because it still sees volumes that indicate a server, just no content or support files.

That’s for that.

Plex/web shows you the server (NAS) name by default.

The new server you created has a new ID number but is still using the NAS name.

What happens is Plex/web is looking for the old ID number.

we need to get rid of that.

  1. Stop Plex

  2. https://app.plex.tv/desktop – Launch the hosted web app.

  3. Settings - Authorized Devices (upper left corner) - Server (Dropdown)

  4. Find the old entry for the original server and delete it.

  5. It should not have a second entry for the new one yet.

  6. Now start Plex

  7. Open , using the LAN IP of the syno (not the quick connect link or anything else), http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web

You should be greeted by the normal Plex sign in, “Got It” and Setup wizard

As an added tool,

When you install the package, you have the “Plex Claim Token” method.

This method, if you use it, does the initial handshake with Plex.tv for you.
You only need to click the “Get Claim Token” link, COPY it from the browser, PASTE it into the installer window, and continue the package install.

During installation, it will take the additional 15-30 seconds to talk to Plex.tv and claim the server for you.

You might end up with two servers of the same name in Plex/web (which is easily fixed after the fact) but it will be claimed to your account (assuming it reports as successfully claimed in the final package install popup message)

Ok thanks for the help. I followed your instructions to the letter, I’m no longer getting the “not authorized” warning, i deleted the server from the plex web app, and re installed it (there was also a new update that came out, so i did that). My plex is running, but it has still not given me an opportunity to create a new server, despite successfully claiming it (claim token method). Instead it just has me log into my empty home screen.

The other thing of note is that in Local Users, there is no longer a Plex user there, despite a few different uninstall/reinstalls.

I feel like we’re close here though.

In DSM 7, DSM 7 forced username change.

  • “Plex” name abandoned and not created anymore
  • “PlexMediaServer” (System Internal User) created and managed by DSM.

For creation and setup,

  1. You must be on the same RFC-1918 LAN
  2. You can’t use the “Quick Connect” link in Package center
  3. Open an incognito window and then open http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web

Here is the release info

Brilliant! Alright great, so now i was able to set up “Chonkyboy” and it sees it in the web app. Last remaining issue (i think) When i go to add media, I can’t see outside of these folders here, where my media is at Z://Chonkyboy/(Movies or TV shows). I tried clicking up a level but it’s showing this as the root with no content.

Here is what my Root looks like
