I want to buy a new Samsung Smart TV, and I need help picking one that's best for Plex

My current TV is a Samsung UN50EH5300 50-Inch that I bought in 2013, so it’s getting old.

First, Plex is the only thing I use on my TV, so I need to do this right. Also, I happen to suck at knowing correct Plex terminology, so I’ll try to be clear.

I like this Plex app, and I don’t feel like changing anything. Tizen stuff confuses me and I don’t know what it means, so I’m wondering if I can keep this app. The one you download here in Samsung apps:

I found these two links about which Samsung TVs support Plex, but honestly, the list confuses me also:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/204080173-which-smart-tv-models-are-supported/

The second link has a lot of model names, and I’m not finding any of those model numbers available on Amazon.

This TV is a good size and in the right price range. It’s a Samsung UN65RU7100FXZA Flat 65’'. The second link above doesn’t have that exact model number.

Does it have the above Plex app?

So, I want a new TV. A Samsung TV. I want to buy it on Amazon. Preferably a 55 inch to 65 inch less than $1000. I do not want a Roku/Nvidia Shield/whatever. I want my new TV to have that app. How can I figure out which ones on Amazon provide it?

ty.

all Samsung smartv’s have the Plex app, but last I heard the 2019 models were taking a while for Samsung to make it available for those models. (the Plex app has been submitted to Samsung for release, but has yet to be released). To find out, go to Samsungs website and find the TV your wanting to purchase. Through that page you can get to the apps for that model.

The version you are showing is not what Plex puts on the tv’s now. That app stopped with the 2015 models, I believe. 2016’s and newer have the latest version.

Thanks!

I also got some information from akaglty in a different post and I heard a QLED might be a better option? I was considering this one:

I found it on the Samsung webpage, but unless I’m missing something, I don’t see a list of all apps on this one? https://www.samsung.com/us/televisions-home-theater/tvs/qled-4k-tvs/65-class-q6f-4k-smart-qled-tv-2018-qn65q6fnafxza/#specs

I’m assuming that doesn’t matter, though, since it’s a 2018 so it definitely has Plex as an app, and just not the Tizen thing?

Thanks for getting back to an apprehensive newb about this stuff!

All newer Samsungs are running Tizen so you cannot get the old app regardless of which TV you’re buying. The 2019 models (Tizen 4 if I’m not mistaken) do not have the app yet but it will come soon. The good news is that a new interface is coming and will resemble the old app you like but we don’t know how soon the Samsung app will be refreshed.

My 2c: don’t buy a TV for the “smart” features, they become old and practically unsupported as soon as the new model is released.
I suggest focus on display quality, audio features and just consider to add an external box for the “smart” part (you’ll have more 1st and 3rd party apps than on the TV platform, and you’ll be able to access new services as soon as they appear and not praying for your platform to be supported and mantained).
And if the box gets old, just replace it for ~$100 and you’ll still get a wonderful experience.

I’ll echo some previous comments, do not buy a tv based on plex.

All smart tv’s will disappoint. And sooner or later they will be abandoned for any software support.

If you ever expect to use 4k on plex, at a minimum you want a tv with E-ARC support. (not very many of them available yet, it is a very new technology). E-ARC is the newer version ARC, they are not the same thing, the old ARC does not support HD audio passthrough.

Only with an E-ARC compatible TV and RECEIVER, will you be able direct play full 4k hdr/atmos bluray rips. And this is not even guaranteed due to the newness of the e-arc technology and devices.

If you want the full 4k video and audio experience without any transcoding, buy the tv you want with the features you want (other than plex), then buy an nvidia shield + atmos receiver.

There is (currently) no other better solution.
