I’m using a Samsung UN48JS8500 and a friend of mine has a UN55JS8500. Both of these TVs are from 2015, and they’re the last to support both 4K and 3D. Both of our TVs have functional Plex apps. However, the Plex website linked here states that the Plex app is available for 2016 and newer.
There’s an app maintained by a committed user for the Samsung Smart Hub TVs. Though that’s a 3rd party app from Plex’ perspective and IIRC it’s sadly barely being supported any longer.
The official smart TV app from Plex is only available for newer Tizen based models.
So my guess is this is where this discrepancy is coming from.
My TV came with the Plex app pre-installed. Couldn’t this only be the case if it was official?Furthermore, this site suggests that the JS8500 is a Tizen-based model.
Have you gone through and done the steps to enable insecure connections? It may be that you both have an outdated app that continues to work because you are allowing insecure connections.
@Blkbyrd: No, I haven’t. And yes that’s a possibility. However, the original post was about the fact that the Plex website currently says that the Plex app is for Samsung TVs 2016 and newer, but my TV is from 2015 and has a functioning, official Plex app on it. Therefore the website appears to be wrong.
Well, I should state that I’m not entirely sure if it’s official. After re-reading tom80H’s post, I suppose it is a possibility that I downloaded the unofficial app through Samsung Smart Hub. I’m pretty sure Plex was pre-installed, suggesting that it is indeed official and that I did not get the unofficial one. Is there a way to verify whether the app on my TV is the official app vs the app created by the committed user?
It is likely because your TV is a 2016 model, but was released in 2015. This is just as common in TVs as it is with vehicles. It means the literature would be correct as it states “The app is available on 2016 and newer model year Samsung sets that are Tizen-based.”
@Blkbyrd: That’s possible I suppose. However, Samsung has a system that they use for model numbers on their TVs (link here). At the very least, Plex would not be using Samsung’s system if what you’re saying is true.
I have no idea then, or why this even really matters. If we really want to nitpick things like this then it should say that it doesn’t really work with any Samsung TV since Samsung made the decision to not properly support any of their TV’s anymore.
The plex version number. I have a 2015 tv UN55JU6500. The j refers to what year the tv. The Samsung plex app has a version of I think 2.014; however, it was an app created by a user known as orca. Because of his health issues, he decided to no longer support this app. That being said I continue to use it and it works perfectly well. It doesn’t have all the latest and greatest additional features but it allows you to browse and play movies and shows just fine. In fact sometimes better. It doesn’t transcode hevc or 4k. It just plays them. Wish the official versions did.
I just checked the Plex app on my UN48JS8500. The app version is 2.006 and is coded by Orca. If this is indeed considered a 3rd party app by Plex, then the website is in fact correct in stating that Samsung TVs 2016 and newer are officially supported.
That is the 3rd party app and the only app for Samsung tvs prior to 2016. Yes our tvs do support Tizen but it’s a very early version that is different from the current implementation There is a slightly newer version of orcas app though.
I can see from this post that the latest version appears to be 2.012, released June 2018. The link for the manuals (here) indicates that there’s a 2.013. I’m guessing the 2.013 is a typo and 2.012 is the last Orca version?
Mike,
the 3rd party app by Orca is no longer supported, I would suggest buying a Roku or Apple Tv or even a Shield pro. I know it’s an expense but it’s your best option.
