iGPU transcode and optimization speeds drastically decreased after update

Server Version#: 1.41.6.9685
Player Version#: 4.145.1

Server has been working flawlessly for many months. About a month ago I turned on the HEVC transcoding option and still worked amazing. My 12700k’s iGPU would consistently get 7-12x speeds with everything set to the highest qualities.

Then I updated to the most recent server version and now I barely get 2x speeds (large files closer to .8x). Changing to my backup GPU (1050ti) gets back up to the 7x range without much struggle.

my diagnostic testing is completely changing all the transcoding settings to ultra fast and simple and hevc off and still barely get 2x speeds. IGPU gets pegged at 100% during any version of transcoding no matter what file I test. Meanwhile the GPU hovers around 70%. I’ve tested super basic x264 files up to 4k 10bit hevc files, no change.

As it stands, the iGPU physically cannot transcode 2 files simultaneously without buffering issues. I used to be able to do 5+ without ever having a hiccup. (my upload speed is my primary limiting factor for not just going direct stream cries in Comcast)

My gut says it’s a software issue with the server update. But I wanted to ask the smarter people of the forum if they’ve noticed anything similar and how they fixed it.

Thanks again!

If you were getting 7-12x speed on HEVC transcodes something was wrong because those intel iGPUs simply cannot do that speed. The true speed is what you see with the server update you mentioned. If you want significantly faster HEVC (and also h264) transcoding performance, use the Intel A310/A380.

And that makes sense. Except now EVERY option of transcoding has been forced to 2x or less regardless of hevc or not. That’s my issue. The update seems to be forcing hevc without it being selected. And a weird side note error I’m also seeing; was optimizing a file from 26mbps to the 1080p 8mbps preset and the final output was 17mbps. So there’s definitely something wrong with plex. I just don’t know what is actually happening and what the fix is. Currently just using my 1050ti is the fix. But I’d prefer the iGPU for normal transcoding needs.

I might be seeing something similar on my 11th Gen intel i5. Whenever I transcode 1 file it maxes out the “Plex” CPU. Changing settings doesn’t seem to matter. This seems to have started about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Never had an issue before this running plex for years. Nothing has changed on the Media Server hardware.

Glad I’m not the only one. I haven’t seen anyone on reddit complain but I can’t imagine we’re the only ones. Seems suspicious.

Not quite the same but my once flawless Plex is now unable to stream anything locally to android without constant buffering. Transcoding or direct play. Pretty much has a dedicated router, tried rolling back clients to no avail, but at least the libraries load in reasonable order now, even if they’re still unwatchable.
On Ubuntu. Problems since latest updates.

Just FYI in my case it turned out I had an issue with the CPU fan and my processor was thermal throttling. Once I fixed that my plex server is back to being awesome.
