Server Version#: Version 4.143.0
Player Version#: Various: iPhone, Samsung TV, etc.
I received an email alert that Plex was being accessed from a nearby community. I immediately changed my password. I logged back into the server with the new password without any problem. But when I try to access the server from my iPhone or any of my TVs on the same network, I am locked out and can’t sign back in with either the old or new password. I’m a lifetime Plex Pass member and I would really appreciate some help signing into the server.
Doing so will also invalidate the access of all apps to your account. Thats what the checkbox “Sign out connected devices after password change” does.
You need to log out on each and every one of your plex apps and log back in with your new password.
Thanks for your quick reply. I have already tried to log back in on all my devices. I get the message, “User could not be authenticated” and a button that says Try Again.
Try setting the “DNS server” setting in your router to either 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8
Is that a setting in Plex or do I have to find it elsewhere?
OK, I used the designation you suggested for DNS server. This time I got a similar message: “User could not be authenticated. This IP appears to be having trouble signing into an account (detected repeated failures)… Try Again.” So that didn’t work.
After doing the change you better restart both the router, as well as all devices in your home network.
If you are trying to sign in a mobile device, make sure it actually uses your home’s WiFi, instead of the mobile provider’s data plan.
Router restarted, phone and devices restarted, all connected to home wifi. Same exact result. I think Plex may need to do something on their end. I think repeated attempts to connect have triggered some kind of lock out on Plex’s end.
Update. I just tried to access the Plex server through Infuse, and got a message saying “Access token is no longer valid” and instructing me to log back into Plex, which I have been trying to do for many hours. So the issue seems to be the access token. Please advise. Thanks.
No, you are not yet blacklisted.
Are you sure that you are using the right access credentials?
I can see no logged password change in the plex account that is connected to the one that you are using in this here forum. The account also has a server in it, which has been active ~1 hour ago.
I have tried both the old password and the new one, and get the same result. User could not be authenticated. I think the issue is the access token as described above. Thanks so much for your help.
It is the access token what gets invalidated by the password change. Very much expected.
Verify that you are trying to sign into the right plex account.
Inspect your user profile in this here forum and look at the email address.
Don’t confuse your Google account and your Plex account.
These are different things – even though they are using the same Google Mail address.
To make matters confusing, you have linked your Google account to your Plex account. So you should be able to log in by either “Continue with Email” (using your Plex.tv password) or by picking “Sign in with Google”, by using your Google password (and whatever you may be using as second security factor, if you have 2FA enabled in your google account).
As far as I can deduce, you have been trying to sign in with your Google account so far.
And it was probably also your Google password that you changed.
Sorry, but I just keep getting the same result. I have tried signing in with Google, with email, with the new and with the old password. I have definitely NOT been trying to sign in with my Google account, and have never tried to sign in with it. My Google password is the same as it has been for years. It was only my Plex password that changed, because of the notification I got from Plex. It may have gotten screwed up by me, for sure. But right now, I need to be able to access my Plex server from my devices. So I start over? Change the password again? Right now, the only thing I can access is the server, but there is not way I can view the password to know if I am inputting the correct PW. I am truly stymied.
Actually, what you are using to access the server is the Plex Web app. Are you saying that you successfully signed it in?
Could you send me the email address that you are using per PM?
I’m trying to verify that we are looking at the same account.
Don’t do anything rashly. Authentication and server data don’t have much to do with each other. Deleting the whole server or account will not do any good for now.
Yes, I am accessing Plex through the Plex Web app on my Mac. I seem to be successfully signed into it. The email address I am using is [masked by moderator]. I will absolutely not delete the server or the account. Again, thanks for your help.
Are you able to view the current password for the account? If so, could you confirm, say, the first and last characters if I were to provide them?
No, definitely not.
What I can say is that this is a different account than the one I looked at initially.
There is also no google account linked to it, so you only have one password.
And you have to use the “Continue with Email” button.
If you are continuing to have difficulty accessing that account, you should contact https://www.plex.tv/contact/?option=plex-pass-billing directly.
They can do and see more than I.
I think I forgot to tell you that not only all your clients are signed out by the password change, but also your server.
(No, the server is not the web app. It is a separate thing.)
You need to restore access to that server as well.
First, delete the 4 items from your server’s .plist file, as described in https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/
After this, claim it using this procedure: New Server Claiming Requirement for MacOS
Well, the solution turned out to be quite simple, and it had nothing to do with any of the suggestions posted here. In fact, I finally found the solution posted on Reddit: Although Plex’s password requirements demand at least one special character be used, certain special characters in the password result in the barrage of failed sign-ins that I (and others) experienced. In my case, removing a $ sign from the password and replacing it with another special character immediately resolved the issues I was having. I can now access my Plex server on all my devices. I believe there are other special characters that will also cause sign-in failures, but I am not sure what they are. The one special character that I KNOW is safe is a + sign. Hopefully, Plex will look into this. Otto, thanks for your kindness in coming to my aid so promptly. Best wishes.
Was the $ sign at the beginning, or the end of the password? Or was it in the middle somewhere?
