IMDB data and posters not displaying for TV shows

I was trying to add a multiseason program to my TV shows library and couldn’t get the episode titles and info to come up on the season. Somehow I thorough screwed it up and had to delete the library and add it back. Now all the posters, episode names and info are gone. No idea how to get them back. Anyone?

I’m pretty sure the Plex-agent only uses metadata from TVDB & TMDB. It does not use IMDB for tv shows.

How are your files named?

There are some 50 shows in the library, from various sources. Up until this morning, they all showed correct posters and episode data. In trying to get an additional season of one show to conform, I did something that wiped out all of the posters and data on all the shows. Now they simply show the title of the program and the seasons. The specific program I was working with is Perry Mason. The nine seasons are all under one folder called “Perry Mason” and the each season is in a separate folder called “Perry Mason Season x (year)”. The episodes are named “01 - The Case of the XXXX.mp4” . The other programs in the library are similarly named and structured. It all worked perfectly until this morning. I don’t know what I did exactly to screw it up, but at one point I had it update something from “legacy” that was supposed to be disappearing at some point in the near future

Let’s start by renaming the files to match the official naming schema.

  1. Show-level folder: Perry Mason — should be ok, you can improve matching quality by including the year the show first aired (e.g. there’s the original show from 1957, „The New Perry Mason“ from 1973 and a new version from 2020)
  2. Season level: should be Season XX — don’t add the show name in the season folder
  3. Episode level: should be Perry Mason - sXXeYY - optional episode title

If you go with another naming schema you might get lucky until you don’t.

Since there are so many episodes of Perry Mason, I tried your suggestion on a smaller series, Chernobyl 2019. No change. I’m skeptical that the naming is the issue since I’ve had 50 shows working flawlessly for six months. The whole thing went to crap when I started fussing around with the Manage Library>edit>advanced specs. There also seems to be multiple places where you specify how the library is managed. All very confusing.

Even within a single series, such as Chernobyl, if I try to match it by clicking on the triple dots, it finds nothing, even in Search Options. For some reason, the system isn’t finding any program data at all. It just shows the show title and number of seasons at top level, then the individual season number, then the episode numbers. No images, no program data.

It appears that the entire Matching function is disabled.

That sounds more like a network issue. Your server logs should show if Plex Media Server is e.g. having trouble to connect to Plex‘s backend (plex.tv). This can happen if you’re using a DNS server that fails to resolve this host.

Following the naming schema is generally a good practice to avoid even weirder mixups.

Actually, when I went in and put the original air date for each series folder, and select the Plex TV Scanner and Plex Series agent, it all magically reappeared. Problem solved. Kids are happy again.
