Plex not adding correct titles of known show (Mad About You)

Example of my naming scheme, which should work as far as I’m aware:
Mad About You - S02 E24

The show is very popular, of course, and even finds the screenshots (or posters as they’re called). But, it doesn’t find the actual titles of the show from the DB for some reason.

This is an example of my logs for this entry:

Try using S02E24 instead of S02 E24

I tried that as well, but that changed nothing. I had deleted the content and all, and then re-added it, and tried again. That failed.

  • You have no “season” folders.
  • You need to specifiy which series by that title it is by adding the release year of S01E01 to the folder name. There are at least 2 different shows by that title. mad about you — The Movie Database (TMDB)
  • I recommend you to always use 2-digit season numbers, unless the season has actually 4-digit numbers
  • The Plex library must point exactly to D:\Videos\TV Shows. Not one folder level above, nor below.

The naming rules: Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support

Yes, I DO have folders for each Season. It’s clearly indicated in the logs themselves…
The name of the show’s folder is ok. If I place (1992) it does not auto find it, and I have to rematch it.
Done, changed the seasons to 01, 02 etc.
Uhm… Plex DOES point to D:\Videos\TV Shows

Still not adding the titles of the episodes correctly. It adds everything else correctly, including the year, the posters etc. by itself.

Also, I’m using the TVDB in this case, which seems to be the default. I looked at their site, and the show is simply Mad About You. No year or anything in parentheses:
https://thetvdb.com/series/mad-about-you

Deleted everything again
Changed everything according to that DB. (I.e.) S01E1 instead of just one season, did that for all of them. Again, posters pop up, descriptions for each show pop up, the year etc… but the actual names of the Episodes don’t. Feels like I’m gonna have to do something specific here.

An hour later…:
Screw it, I used Mp3 Tag to change the names internally (and then refreshed the metadata). But if you have other ideas for other series I have, let me know lol.

Please show a fill folder path + filenames as they are now.
Please tell which metadata agent has been selected in the properties of the library (on the “Advanced” tab).

D:\Videos\TV Shows\Mad About You\Season 01\Mad About You - S01E01.mkv

Metadata agent → TheTVDB

I disable local metadata.

That’s the old agent, which won’t be available in the future. And which is not receiving many updates anymore.
Any particular reason why you’re still using it?

Please go to
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
and make a screenshot

It’s the default one. Also, the other DB that you mention doesn’t work very well in my case (not displaying imgs correctly if at all), so shrugs.

Also, I can’t update Plex, and I don’t care to troubleshoot that specific issue honestly. If me not using the DB you’re referring to screws up everything… I’ll consider what actions to take down the road.

It was the default one, when you created the library a few years ago.

It is using a different subdomain (metadata.provider.plex.tv) than the old agent. If your machine or your router is using a manually created filter set of allowed subdomains. then I’d check if this subdomain is among the “allowed” ones.
Sometimes even the DNS is to blame. Apparently some DNS servers of ISPs are not updating their records regularly.

How so?

Yup, still the default one for me lol, since I can’t update Plex.
I try and this is what happens:
Press Download, Press Install. Does nothing. Looks like it might, but it doesn’t at all. shrugs

I haven’t changed anything in relation to my router. I have not changed my DNS. I thought I had, but nope, apparently. Unless something reset it maybe when we swapped routers a year ago.

I assume that all my templates, information, descriptions, posters etc., will remain the same in the future? That is, if I copy and paste my data from the folder (see below)? I.e. if I end up reinstalling Plex in the future, and re-adding this folder:
C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server

Update “manually”

  • stop Plex server using its task tray icon
  • uninstall Plex server using the regular Apps control panel of Windows
  • download and run the new installer

Do NOT use “uninstaller” software.
Disable CCleaner and similar tools which aim to “clean” the registry and Windows data folders.
Otherwise you risk losing your Plex library data.

Careful: if you copy this folder while the server is still running, you’ll end up with a damaged database.
For a complete backup, you’ll also need some registry entries:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201539237-backing-up-plex-media-server-data/

But try the manual update first.

Oh yeah, I have this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server

Saved that years ago lol. But, as long as my actual data is saved, that’s what matters.
Thanks for the info regardless. I’m heading to bed, but I may do this this weekend once I get the chance.

Fetch a new copy. These things change over time.
