[Implemented] Gapless Playback

seriously, how long are we going to go on with this? We’ve since added DVR functionality but still no gapless playback. that’s irritating. Of all the features this is the only one I really want. The music server Subsonic streams gapless so I’m not really sure what’s different about plex from that that makes it so difficult to implement. Could someone give me a reason? Thanks

After experimenting over the weekend the only device I can get gapless play back with is Rasplex, hope this helps.
I’ve tried ipod, iPad , android and PC

@dbmgti07 , so I’d need to be using a raspberry pie then?

Correct I’m still testing it out works well with mp3 320kbps, I want to test it with flac

No, use Kodi with one of the plug ins.

Kodi plex add on is ok but rasplex interface (aeon nox) blows the kodi add on out of the water in my honest opinion.

But kodi works on various platforms, including a billion devices?

I don’t want that gap in Plex Music libraries.
It’s a must-have the gapless function.

This seems to have been at least partially implemented. Here’s what to do:

Locate the iOS.xml Profile from your server and change the Transcode Target for the Music entry to FLAC. Save the changes (I recommend making a copy of the original first!). Restart the server app.

On your iPhone, select any song from your FLAC library and sync it. Upon local playback, you shouldn’t have any dropouts between tracks (some songs may clip/pop — Linkin Park’s Papercut to One Step Closer has a pop but Leave Out the Rest to Bleed It Out does NOT pop).

This may only work with Lossless for now. MP3s still contain gaps. I did NOT test ALAC or AAC but since both of those have different headers (vs MP3s) which make it easier for gapless playback, I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t work.

My environment:
MyCloudPR4100
Latest version of the Plex Server
Latest version of the iOS App
iPhone 8 Plus w/ iOS11

Now that it supports Android Auto, Plex needs to round out its audio capabilities so that it is actually useful in the car:

  • gapless
  • crossfade
  • ReplayGain
  • local music playback

Exactly what I need! I recently installed a different media player on my Samsung S7 just to have crossfade, replaygain and gapless playback because I was sick of the pauses when listening to Pink Floyd albums, sick of volume differences when listening to different songs (although they ALL have replaygain tags) and just love crossfade when jumping between songs. Simple but so effective.

Plex is great. Don’t understand why simple Android apps can have features that a company with one of the best media players in the world isn’t able to implement.

Yes Yes Yes!!!

Yes yes yes

Bring it on!

Right now i use a 3rd Party app to play my music on android and PC. If plex had crossfade, it would replace all other media players on my phone and computer. Hope it happens !

@Daedalus7 Crossfade is a separate feature (but would require the pre-buffering of the next track that is also required to implement gapless playback).

How long will I have to hold my breath for

Well, we (the Plex community) have been asking for this for years, and apparently they don’t care? Idk… I love Plex and all the features it offers… but the music playback really, really needs crossfade and gapless playback, including when streaming. Very frustrating. I can’t believe they can’t/won’t implement this.

Yet they literally announced just that yesterday in PlexAmp… Now that the server can do it in sure it will come to other players.

@KarlDag Based on what I was reading on the Plexamp Twitter account, its not server side, it’s actually client side for that app… and they said they either have to try to sort out a server side option, which they say is difficult, or set it up client by client… and some platforms supposedly don’t support that? Idk… :frowning:
