Importing iTunes media library Plex doesn't find all content

TL;DR: Want to import 5.5 TB iTunes library into Plex but it’s only seeing a small portion of my content.

Longer boring version:

I just downloaded and started to setup Plex. Hopefully this isn’t some stupid question that’s been answered dozens of times before. I did search here on a general Google search but didn’t find the answer.

I installed the Plex server and now need to move my full Apple iTunes library to Plex. I don’t need to move the files. I only need to have Plex see them in their current location on my PC.

The iTunes library is on a separate disk on my computer (not networked) and is about 5.5 TB.

When I add the library in Plex it finds some of the content but not all of it. For example, it’ll find a TV show and show some of the seasons but not all and in each season only show a few of the episodes, not all of them.

I did see that ideally all of the individual episodes should be named in a specific format but that would take a HUGE amount of time for me to manually rename every episode.

I was hoping there’s some way to tell Plex to import my iTunes library and it would know the folder and file layout and automatically import everything including episode order and episode information like air date and description.

I did find some comments online mentioning exporting the iTunes library (.xml file?) and setting a flag in Plex that it’s importing from iTunes but I haven’t been able to find any such options in Plex.

So, am I missing some obvious step or will this be as big of a task as it seems?

Of course, please feel free to ask if you have any questions for me. And please be gentle if I’m being dense and the answer was hiding in plain sight right in front of my eyes :slightly_smiling_face:.

Thanks for the link! I did check all of those notes and all looks good. From the parent directory down to the individual files all have full control for me as the only user on this computer.

The files in those directories are all the same type and no DRM material or disk image files.

What also seems odd is when I look at a season of one of the shows the single episode name in there does not match any actual episodes! In my iTunes library the filenames are the episode names. The names are alphanumeric with spaces in them. No other special characters.

I’m now wondering if Plex has the ability to import an iTunes library without me having to manually rename every single file.

I would complain but I’m using the free version and so far it’s worth every cent I’ve paid :slightly_smiling_face: .

I’m assuming once I get past this hurdle I’ll have a better opinion of it but only time will tell.

Not sure what that means, but if the folder structure and the file names don’t follow https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/
then your results are bound to be non-deterministic about what gets picked up and what doesn’t.

I wouldn’t get up my hopes.
