I’ve been running a Plex server on an old MacMini (late 2012) connected to an HD Samsung TV for several years. My TV started to misbehave and I was in the position I could afford a new one. I got myself an 4k/UHD LG OLED 55E7N.
The old Samsung tv wasn’t smart, so i watched with openPHT (I don’t like PMP). Unfortunately the MacMini can’t handle 4k. The Plex app on the LG isn’t my favorite either; I can’t change subtitle settings (I am not a native English speaker, and I do like other non-English movies). XPlay has the same features missing, although I like the GUI much better.
At the same time the MacMini is getting older, and the 6 external harddisks with media on it are a failure waiting to happen.
I was hoping a new 4k MacMini would be released soon, but I’m starting to doubt that. But change seems to be inevitable.
I’ve been thinking about a good NAS. But I find it hard to get reviews on Plex servers/players. A MacTV and a NAS? Same thing… Should I wait until it wil be clear there won’t be a new MacMini?
So many options, questions, and I am utterly confused and unable to decide on anything.
Some advice anyone?
