Unable to add media server in synology

Hi, I’m having the same issue as here https://forums.plex.tv/t/in-plex-media-server-i-cannot-find-my-video-assets-from-my-nas-synology-ds414-nas

which says was resolved via DM. I cannot post on that topic because it’s closed. How did you guys solve it? @christoph_hanne_gmail_com @ChuckPa
Thanks!

Let’s start by adding what version of DSM you’re running on that Synology and what version of Plex Media Server you have installed.

Plex Media Server 1.22.3.4392
DSM 6.2.4-25556

So… this is about you setting up a Plex Media Server on that machine or a server that used to be running?
Have you already completed the setup by opening your Plex Media Server through the Synology’s local IP address (http://[Syno-IP-address]:32400/web)? You can only access your server from other clients (e.g. the web client from http://app.plex.tv/desktop) after it’s been linked to your Plex account. To do that you need to access the bundled version of the web client (via the Syno-IP link described above). If you don’t want to link your Plex Media Server to your account you can also keep managing it from that local web app.

No, it’s a new installation. When I go to http://[Syno-IP-address]:32400/web I see the “Install Plex Media Server” message even though it’s already installed.

I can’t see my server anywhere, so I can’t do method #1. I’ll have to try method #2 for DSM 6.x next time I attempt to install it.

This guide says my computer needs to be in the same subnet as the NAS. I’m connecting to the network through a VPN. The synology IP is 192.168.x.x and my IP is 10.x.x.x. Could this be the problem? I can access the synology using 192.168.x.x without issues though…

Thanks for the quick responses guys

If you’re accessing an unclaimed server, you need to be on its local network. One way to achieve that is to go through a SSH tunnel (see last section of the support article linked below).
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200288586-installation/

not exactly sure what you mean. There’s 2 parts to setting up a Plex Media Server:

  1. installing the actual application
  2. doing the basic configuration on 1st run (e.g. assigning a name to the server, linking it to your Plex account…)

This is the bit I don’t understand. If I’m connected through a VPN to the same network that the NAS is in, am I not on its local network?

Thanks!! I made it work with the tunnel (btw, I wonder why the tunnelling bit is not mentioned in the guide I linked above!). Although it wasn’t quite as straightforward as it looked… I had to change some SSH settings in the NAS in order to be able to create the tunnel.
Unfortunately it turns out that, after all, my Synology DS215j is not powerful enough to handle Plex and I get an error “This server is not powerful enough to convert video.” when trying to play any content :sob:

Thanks for the help though!

Thanks, I think I’m going to leave it here. Having the Plex Server in the NAS would have been nice as it’s always on (especially to share the libraries with family) but I’m just going to stick to my Mac’s Plex Server and only turn it on when needed.

Thanks for the quick responses, the support has been top notch!
