So I’ve been using the Plex app on my android GalaxyS9 for ages now to cast music to Plexamp that I have running on my headless linux server. Normally I just make sure that Plex is in focus (would be nice if I didn’t have to do this but that’s another issue) and then change the volume using the volume rocker keys.
However, after the latest update (7.3.1.0.16802) all that happens when I use the volume rocker while casting is my phones media volume changes, but not Plexamp. Volume changes fine when not casting. Is there a bug or some issue on my end that I can fix? I am not aware of any other way to change the volume and can’t see anything in the settings.
After an update, which was like a week ago, I can’t control my Chromecast volume anymore. It only changes the volume of the phone media.
If I have the plex app open or even the google home one, it works, but it’s a pain since I need to unlock the phone and open the app. If I try to change the volume even with plex running in the background and the phone unlocked, it will still change my media volume.
I dug out on old phone that didn’t have the latest android version of Plex that I set out above in the OP and was experiencing the same issue, so seems to be related to PMS itself. I think the problem came when I upgraded PMS to 1.19.1.2645, and unfortunately continues with 1.19.1.2701.
Glad to know it’s not just me experiencing this issue, although at least for Aleczk it seems to still work if Plex is open.
I downgraded the Plex App in Android using Aptoide to the version 7.30.2.16712 (08/04) and now it works!
Apparently something in the update 7.31.0.16802 (15/04) broke it and still remains in the newer version (8.0.0.17168). So my problem it’s app related while yours seems to be server related unfortunately…
I hope they fix it, but meanwhile I will turn off the updates for Plex on my android device.
I’m using the lastest server version btw 1.19.1.2701.
I’m also having this issue with my Pixel2 XL. The volume rocker buttons work if I have the app open in the foreground while casting to my Chromecast, but outside of the app it only changes the default phone media volume. Other apps (such as Twitch), will change the volume of the ‘casting’ app rather than the default media volume.
I’ve been a Plex user for a while now, but just started using the cast feature the other day. I was surprised to see in the forum that this is a new problem–I assumed that this was just the way it works. It is definitely more convenient to allow the volume keys to control the casting volume. To have to go into the app and then into the casting menu to try to adjust the volume minimally with a slider is way too much button pushing for a basic option.
The thing that perplexes me is some people seem to be able to still change the volume if they open up the Plex app and then use the volume keys it works, whereas I seem to have lost the ability to control the volume while casting (to Plexamp) entirely. Pretty frustrating as it was the primary way I used Plex, I must admit since this bug emerged I’ve hardly been using it
randoplexusr, I just had to do a test after reading your last post. It seems I can use the volume keys when I am in the Plex app. When I was first playing with casting the other day, I was doing other things on the tablet and was not in the Plex app when I was trying to adjust the volume. Regardless, it is still inconvenient to have to go into the app to adjust the volume.
Oh well I’m glad it’s partially working for you lithophone.
I just had a go at trying to install the older 7.30.2 version sourced from these forums (Plex for Android - #339 by romancamelia) and Aptoide as suggested by Aleczk but couldn’t get them to install properly (says App not installed), despite uninstalling the latest 8.0.2 version. Also had a go at updating to the latest PMS version 1.19.3.2831 but didn’t make any difference. Seems I’m stuck with this problem until a bug fix is pushed
Now suddenly it is showing what is playing again and I can pause/skip (which I could never do before when talking about skipping) the episode on the widget. The volume rockers still aren’t working. I’m in the Beta program btw.
I tested on my mom’s iPhone 6, on another Chromecast I have in the house and the same thing happens, volume rockers won’t work but I didn’t check the widget tho.
I’m also facing this issue on the latest version of Plex and was able to resolve it by downgrading to 7.3.20 as suggested by Aleczk. This volume control functionality is a key part of my daily flow and it’s disappointing that it’s been broken for so long.
When can we expect a fix for this?
I’m also going to stick with this older version and don’t plan on upgrading until this is fixed.
I purchased a Plex Pass to support the company and I hope that our concerns are addressed ASAP.
At least the new 3.2 release of Plexamp has an on-screen volume slider that you can use while casting. Media keys would be nice but am happy to have SOME ability to control volume remotely again!
The problem still persist, you can’t change the volume of the Chromecast using the rocker buttons from your phone. Maybe in Plexamp, which I don’t use and really don’t know what it is about, but not in PLEX the Movie/Series cast app. You still need to have the Plex app open for the rocker buttons to work.
I have 3 Chromecasts (2x 1gen, 1x 2gen) here and they all have this problem. Android or iOS, it doesn’t matter. Only with Plex. Youtube, Twitch and every other app I can think of works fine.
