I’ve reencoded a few usin a simple free tool if I want to watch on PS3, seems a bit of a pain just to do this to watch in correct aspect. No loss of quality really just means backup to mkv needs to be encoded to mp4 additional step.
What’s the name of the tool that you use, please?
Any progress on this? Sorry to nag, I know you guys must be working hard to fix it, but it’s driving me crazy! I keep running into files that have this problem and it’s so frustrating, especially since I’m paying for this service. Please tell me you’re making progress!
Nothing new to report. Trust me. When this dragon is slain the bells will toll loudly.
Anything new on this? Maybe something soon?
I bought plex pass to help support plex because I used the free media server for PS3 for the longest time, now buy a PS4, and all my aspect ratio’s are 4:3 no widescreen whatsoever. its been a problem since the 30th of April?
Sadly it’s been a problem since the app was introduced. This problem is driving me crazy as well.
The issue is with anamorphic videos, for example DVD rips. The device doesn’t play them correctly. Sony has fixed the issue for us but we can’t pick only the fix and add it to our app; we have to take an entire platform update from them. Issue is, the platform updates have contained other show-stopper regressions which prevent us from updating the app.
Very frustrating. I’m very sorry for the frowns.
What will need to be lost to get this update? A crappy looking movie is totally useless as far as im concerned.

@mattseeley I realise that there has also been a christmas holiday but it has been some time since this comment. Have you managed to make any progress with Sony on the issues with the platform update so we may once again watch anamorphic videos without distortion?
Ditto on the update. Just purchased a PS4 as I thought this would be the best all-in-one platform. If a fix isn’t forthcoming (and I realize it looks to be more of a Sony issue…), it’d be nice to know soon so I can still return the PS4 within the return period, and look for other options.
Thanks
Still no news on this? I don’t mean to sound impatient and I get that it’s a Sony issue but it’s been a year now. Can we expect a fix for this or not?
Unfortunately we are still blocked on new issues that were introduced on the updated PS app platform, We can’t update the Plex app to use the new platform until Sony addresses the newly introduced show-stoppers.
I assume, like PS3, Netflix works fine. I wonder why they can get it to work.

How very frustrating. Thanks for the update.

Sadly there’s not much point in waiting for this to be fixed - I’ve moved to a Google Chromecast which allows my video to be seen at the correct aspect ratio, though I think it’s capped to 12mbits/sec.
I have to admit I’m considering getting a Roku 3 to replace the PS3 - I never use the Playstation for anything other than Plex anyway!
I am new to Plex and am in the process of evaluating it before I make a full commitment to deploying the apps on all my families televisions, mobile devices and sign-up for a subscription.
So far I have a big frustration that I would like some insight on.
It occurs when I have to reduce the bandwidth from the MPEG-4’s original bandwidth needs on the latest Plex app on my PS4. When I do that, the aspect ratio changes from what it show be (and was until I experienced a bandwidth problem).
In the case where the video’s content aspect ratio is 16:9 and filled the screen on my HDTV, anything lower than original bandwidth causes the image to narrow to something a narrower than 16:9, but not quite 4:3 (adding 'pillar boxes" to each side)
In the case where the video content’s aspect ratio is wider than fills the 16:9 display, and therefore is letter-boxed at the top and bottom, any bandwidth setting lower than the original causes the video image to be vertically stretched to fill the entire 16:9 display (losing the letter-boxing at the top and bottom).
I am willing to sacrifice image quality when bandwidth is constrained, but I am not willing to have the image also squeezed or stretched to an aspect ratio other than the original video.
Is this fixable or going to be fixed? If not, I am going to look for a media server solution elsewhere.

Unfortunately, Netflix gets preferential treatment in most platforms which is something we haven’t been getting much of, so netflix is usually not a great example to compare other apps to,

As much as it makes me sad to say, I think you’ll have a much better Plex experience with a Roku, Fire TV or a raspberry Pi than you would with a PS3. the platform is slow and buggy, we try our best but it can only go so far. at the end of the day we want you to enjoy plex. ![]()
@mail@ahlberg.us, not promises but I’ll see if I can re-produce that locally and it’s something we can fix on the server side,
