According to @ApexAftermath (see above), the Client fix is only needed for Direct Play videos, but the Server needed a fix for Direct Stream and Transcoded files.
Since my inet upload is limited, the later is true, so that would at least solve my issue with the PS4.
If you check @ApexAftermath you can see that he is actually quoting me
The server fix alone will not fix the issue for any clients since the client still incorrectly boxes the videos, a client fix alone however would fix the playback for direct play since server has no real role in the playback.
Either way, the client fix is also being released VERY shortly so the whole thing should be solved very soon.

You guys can just go ahead and keep being awesome. Thanks for getting this pushed out!
@kayone just using the opportunity of having you posting in here to ask… Any chance we might get a dedicated video player, sort of like PMP or even like the update on Roku that just pushed out? Feels like the PS4 should be able to support more than the app does now, but I realize you’re limited by sony’s platform… Just wondering how limited it really is or isn’t.
I’ve been following this discussion since I discovered I was having the same issues with the PS4 incorrectly displaying anamorphic DVD video files.
According to the latest info on this thread and others the issue should now be fixed with the updates. I’ve performed all updates and some of my DVD video files now seem to be displaying correctly through the PS4, but not all.
The ones that are still displaying incorrectly (on the PS4) I have also just tried on:
3rd gen Apple TV (setup with OpenPlex)
iPad Air 2
Xbox 360
Macbook Pro through web browser (firefox)
Macbook Pro through Plex Home Theater application
All of these display correctly. But not the PS4.
I haven’t felt the need to bother posting in this discussion until now as I’m not hearing anyone else complain of the same issue (since the update) yet so I’m wondering if there is anything that I’m doing wrong?
Maybe I did something wrong when using Handbrake to encode the DVD rips?
I have attached a log of complete media information for a file that DOES display correctly on PS4 and one that DOES NOT display correctly on the PS4, but does display correctly on all the other devices as listed above.
I tried to compare these two media information and found one little difference:
In Wives and Daughter, the Server selects a subtilte stream to show on screen and hence forces to transcode. You can see that in your Server.log.
With Lost Prince it will probably not transcode the file. Unfortunatly a cannot find a proof in thi Server.log, since the filename is not mentioned anywhere.
If i’m right about that, the it proofs, that the PS4 Client fix is finally working ok (with a direct play movie), while the PLEX Servers transcoded file will not.
But there’s another very important detail, that should not be missed:
According to the Server.log, you are still running PLEX Server v9.15.3 ! The PS4 transcoding fix would be in v9.15.4.
I’ve just looked at my files with subtitles and without. All those without display fine. All those with display wrong.
I tried a particular file that includes subtitles, but turned them off and the image displayed perfect. As soon as I turned them back on the transcoding started and the image displayed wrong.
So you are correct - I don’t think I could have figured that out on my own so a big thanks! I had read previously about subtitles forcing encoding but I never connected the dots that it related to this.
Regarding the update. Strangest thing:
Naturally as soon as I saw the latest on this thread that the update was available I went into the server and completed the update. I actually saw the progress bar and installation. I didn’t look at it afterwards to see what version it was running after that (obviously because I assumed it updated correctly with the progress bar and such) so I’ve just looked now and you are correct it is running 0.9.15.3. I have tried up to 5 times to ‘check for update’ and it keeps telling me it’s ‘Up to date’. Please see attached screen shot.
I am quite the noob with this stuff so maybe I am doing something very obviously wrong? My settings are configured for automatic update downloads if that helps. I did a quick google ‘plex update not showing’ and nothing relevant.
Not sure if you are able to help with this issue now and also think maybe this should move to another thread as it’s probably unrelated to the aspect ratio issue.

Since 0.9.14 the update feature is hit or miss… Back then they decided to not make it update automatically because changes were too big. Theyve switched it back to normal since then, but I’ve had issues too.
Install the latest version from the plex.tv website directly.
@sg8891 - the server update to 0.9.15.4 requires a Plex Pass. You can buy a Plex Pass and update, or wait until the new version becomes available for all.
@KarlDag - thanks for you input however it seems I am just very uninformed:
@leelynds - you are correct. I had no idea plex pass was required for the latest update. I checked the downloads page to try manually and sure enough it shows Plex Pass required for v9.15.4. So I’m sure once the update is done the aspect ratio problem will be resolved.
@ApexAftermath - thanks for your response too. Just to confirm to anyone else who happens to view this there is no problem with the update whatsoever.
Thanks all for such quick and helpful responses. I’ve observed how receptive the Plex staff are to issues posted on these forums and it’s so impressive that they have listened to this aspect ratio issue and fixed it despite Sony difficulties. Awesome job! Makes me feel very confident to use Plex long into the future
Yeah you’re going to need a plex pass if you want that update. There’s nothing wrong with updating and that issue refered to above isn’t what is wrong. Once you get plex pass you should get told a new update is available.

short answer, most likely not. longer, less depressing answer, It’s gonna get a bit better, during the past week I’ve been experimenting with the newer PlayStation video player to see if it’s stable enough to be a replacement, and so far it’s looking pretty good. we most likely won’t gain any new format support but it seems to be more stable than our current player. It also helps us remove a bunch of workaround/hacks we needed for the old player and the big one is it finally allows us to upgrade to the new framework that sony has made available, which means all around a better user experience.
