Infrequent crashes when hardware transcoding stream is started

Server Version#: 1.16.0.1226
Player Version#:

Been having issues with what appears to be crashes caused by hardware transcoding for a while. On my previous build, I thought it was caused by poor compatibility with my old AMD card - it still worked, but would occasionally BSOD or hang.

Recently changed some hardware and now I’m using hardware transcoding with Quicksync on a Pentium G4600 CPU. It was still causing occasional BSODs, which I seem to have solved by deleting the ‘Codecs’ folder and repopulating it. However, although it hasn’t caused a BSOD since, Plex itself will still crash.

I don’t use hardware transcoding myself since all my players will direct play my media, so this happens when other people access my server (either transcoded over remote access or apps that don’t support direct play, like mobile apps). I can’t reliably reproduce it on my own and it doesn’t happen all the time - I can confirm hardware transcoding is functional when being used by others (from Plex status and monitoring usage in task manager). I generally find Plex has crashed what seems like once every few days now, though.

I’ve read some other threads about this - I don’t believe it’s running as a service and it has a monitor connected, although sometimes it’s set to a different input since I use the monitor for my main PC. I do RDP in at times as well. I’ve tried reproducing the problem myself when RDP session is active, but no luck (hardware transcoding works and no crashes).

I also used this guide to migrate settings from my old build if that matters.

I’m glad it’s not randomly crashing my server anymore but I’d like to figure out why it’s still having trouble from time to time. Logs attached. Let me know if I missed any relevant details.
