Thank you so much for your detailed explanation and further elaboration. I, for one, am the kind who needs to know the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of things to get a fuller grasp of what’s going on.
Having followed your above guide to the plex share, I can confirm the System-internal-user named “PlexMediaServer” does exist with necessary RW privileges.
The only reason It’s there - I had tried numerous other locations and couldn’t get anything - once I dropped files into a sub-folder, it just started working…
I understand that you’re happy that it works. If you’re careful and don’t misclick when making libraries, I think you can leave it there as an appropriate workaround. But I’m still concerned as to why we cannot get the old Plex share to work properly. If you want to keep trying a few things, there may be one thing.
I avoided upgrading my NAS DSM to 7 because of the hassle involved in getting Plex to work with it, so I don’t have any hands-on experience. But one thing I recall reading about it all is that sometimes the permissions may be incorrect. One last thing I suggest we try is to reset the permissions. Uncheck all the permissions for that user. Then go into Scenario 2 Step 4 of the link I provided earlier:
Change the shared folder permissions using
a. Open Control Panel
b. Shared Folders
c. EDIT the Plex share
d. Permissions tab
e. Change Local User to System Internal User
f. For user PlexMediaServer , click Custom checkbox
g. Check all Administration boxes
h. Check all Read boxes
i. Check all Write boxes
j. Click Done
k. Check ‘ Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files ’.
l. Click Save (Applies shared folder permission changes)
m. – Now wait until all changes are applied – (this takes time)
n. Click Save again to return to the Shared Folders app.
If that fails to allow a video in the Plex share to show up, I’m stuck. Can probably look into the logs further to see if its a permissions issue or just not seeing it, but that may be another forum warriors speciality.
**Mind you, I am aware these steps are technically for getting the Plexserver user to see the old Plex install for migration to DSM 7, but I figured that permission reset may still apply to this case.
