Intel 11700K QuickSync slower to transcode than software. Jellyfin works fine

Server Version#: 1.25.0.5220 (currently beta)
Player Version#: 4.66.1 (Web)
Intel i7 11700K
Unraid 6.9.2

Running the beta 1.25.0.5220 and there are no artefacts, hardware transcoding “works” (shows up in the dashboard) and using intel_gpu_top I can see QuickSync working BUT my system actually transcodes faster with it disabled.

Software transcoding: speed = 0.8 to 1.1 (no buffering)

Hardware transcoding: speed = 0.5 - 0.8 (buffering every 15-30 seconds or so)

Here’s intel_gpu_top running to show there’s plenty of headroom for transcoding.

I installed Jellyfin which worked perfectly. As you can see, the iGPU is being worked much harder:

What information can I provide that would be useful to debug this?

After a few server reboots, it seems to be functioning normally. The only thing I changed was the transcode speed from “Ultra” to “Super”, noticed the difference and changed it back to “Ultra” to check if that was still slow and nope; working perfectly.

So if anyone finds this post, suffering from the same, try:

  1. Changing the transcode speed
  2. Rebooting a bunch
