I have thesame issue, many files running without problems but some of them causing BSoD and autorestarts the aTV. And these are mkv-s, not mp4. (3rd gen, latest fw)
I could make some tests, because i'm really angry about this issue, I spent 2 weeks to set up my infrastructure on my nas... :)
Please tell me how to turn off fanart or what else test could help us to retrace the reason of this problem.
That bitrate may be too high for Atv, but I’m not sure. Easy test would be to remux one of those problematic ones to MP4 with ac3 or stereo sound and test it.
After having my ATV3 iOS 7.0 packed during 3 months (moving to a new house) it was my turn to observe this problem. Did anyone discovered the solution, or the way to avoid it ?
It happened to me in this music film, in Direct Play mode:
I got this last night with the newest Louis CK special I bought for 5 bucks. 1080p and .mp4. After 20 minutes the infinite buffering kicked in and a reboot was all that would fix it. Tried restarting PlexConnect and that did nothing. 20 minutes later, same thing. Latest pull of PlexConnect and 0.9.11.7 of the PMS.
17 months ago Apple almost killed Plexconnect. Now it killed atv3 rev A users that installed firmware 7. Probably plexconnect’s future will be restricted to existing users, new users will not be able to run it…
Debug log from PlexConnect might show why you have it.
Logs have been seen many times on this one, and because it happens after playback Plexconnect is no longer involved so nothing is logged.
I only competed the update about a week ago and have not seen the issues, and Based on the feedback in this thread and looking at the number of people who answered Baa's survey stating they were running the 7+ as a firmware it seems that its only occurs in given circumstances and not everyone is the issue.
I have PMS installed in a Syno where transcoding is disabled (ARM processor). All my files are MP4 or M4V and I'm forcing Direct Play in ATVSettings.cfg. My "problematic file" was coded with Handbrake's high profile @ 23.976fps, I will recode it again with ATV3 profile @ 25fps (from the original DVD) and report the result.
Also let me clarify what are my symptoms. I'm playing the "problematic film" and suddenly, not always at the same time, the ATV enters in a "perpetual buffering". Then I navigate through the screens, navigation is Ok but I cannot play anything (even from YouTube). It looks like Apple's internal player in the ATV is stuck. So I navigate to the reboot option, and after rebooting the ATV can play again my films (or YouTube's films). I have reproduced the problem 3x with this file alone, after rebooting the ATV3.
only occurs in given circumstances and not everyone is the issue.
Correct, but not all the issues are being posted here, see this one for example (in french).
- ATV freeze during the playback, no navigation is possible, you need to reboot ATV by unplugging it from power (happened to me twice, 1st time on FW 6, second on FW 7)
- ATV enters constant buffering loop (happened to me a few times, mostly on FW 6, solved by enabling GDM in PlexConnect)
- ATV reboots during playback (happened few times when video bitrate or number of ref frames was too high)

I am going to open a separate thread for "ATV enters constant buffering" in order to make it easier to debug.
I can reproduce the problem, enabling GDM did not solve the problem for me, but I found another circumvention, not satisfactory, to avoid the problem -> disable Dolby Digital in the ATV.
I have re-ripped the film from its original DVD, so now I have two 3.63Gb files, I will pass both through PHT and PlexConnect. It takes time, each test requires ~2h of playing the film until the buffering starts, and this implies that I have to leave the TV playing while the family is sleeping...
