iOS App - Discover/Search enhancements // mod: library tabs on top and bottom of screen

I’m actually using the app purely to search for content from streaming services. I don’t have any local media and I’ve found that the Discover feature is low key amazing and actually blows away a lot of the more established apps that only do “that”, especially in terms of UI and simplicity. It’s the only app I know that has both the rotten tomatoes critic score and audience score, which is so great. I know it’s tagged as Beta, so hopefully more enhancements are to come, but here are some I’d love to see:

Must haves:

  1. Genre filter/search for streaming services. This exists for the “On Plex” free content, but I’m referring to other streaming services. The categories already on the discover page are actually very very useful and spot on to have (i.e., Trending on individual services, coming soon, new releases, available for purchase or streaming, and other useful ones). But, I see that there is only one category at the bottom that starts to get at Genres. For example right now it’s “Popular in Action” and I think it changes randomly when you reload the app. I’d love a way to specifically choose the Genre so the entire discover page only shows the previous categories based on that Genre or at least be able to search only in a specific Genre. Basically something very similar to when you click on “Movies & Shows” and you get all the Genre tiles to pop up, very good looking visually and easy to navigate.

  2. More filters for search. I see the “more ways to watch” filter was added. Since I’m only using this to discover content on my services, can you also add a way to toggle the free live tv / free on demand in search results? Or at least a way to have the “more ways to watch” results appear first if desired? A genre filter could also be added here in addition to the one suggested for the discover page. Also, searching for people is only limited to the free on demand movies, can this be extended to services as well?

Nice to haves:

  1. Show content trending on “X” service, but for every service you selected, individually. This is basically already there, as there is a row that groups trending content on all services as well as individual services, but for example, right now it only displays a handful of the services individually (i.e., Trending on Apple TV+, Trending on Hulu, etc…) but it stops at some point, so there won’t be a “Trending on Netflix” row for example, even though that’s one of my selected services. I believe the categories randomly change on it’s own and cycles through the services when you reload the app. I’d love to just have all of them show as their own row or have a filter option so that the whole discover page only shows all the categories for that service only.

  2. Better search results. I feel as though you need to type a lot more of the movie or tv show name in order to get the desired result. Maybe this has to do with sorting by trending or popularity instead of exact match, but other search services seem to give you the desired result with less.

  3. Direct link to rotten tomatoes site when you click on the rating. This would be awesome as a lot of the times I want to look at the audience review comments.

  4. Highest audio/video quality badges. I’m obsessed with the best a/v quality, so knowing right off the bat if the stream is in 4K / Dolby Vision / Dolby Atmos, would be so satisfying. Something similar to how Apple TV app does it, where it shows HD vs. 4K, HDR vs. Dolby Vision or 5.1 vs. Dolby Atmos.

  5. Add page icons for navigation at bottom of the app. When you are in the “Home” section, you get the Home / Watchlist icons at the bottom, but you have to use the 3 lines at the top left to navigate to the Discover page, and then you lose any icons at the bottom. I’d suggest just keeping all icons at the bottom of every page, so you’d have Home, Discover, Search (perhaps), Watchlist, etc. for easier navigation. Or if there are too many, allow us to choose which to pin, similar to the sidebar option. For example, I would pin Home, Discover, Search, Watchlist to the bottom if it was a functionality.

Hope some of these make it in, thanks!

You should really focus on one suggestion per thread in this category to allow users to actually vote for them (instead of having to go for the full package).

Having a first look at what you’re suggesting it seems there’s a number of overlaps with existing suggestions:

Must Have

  1. Genre filter for discover → might be unique but seems to partially overlap with this suggestion: Genres not working in discovery beta (or atleast not in a good way)
  2. Excluding free video-on-demand / live tv streaming from search results → duplicate:
Search filtering sources-removeable "Free on Demand" content option

Nice to have

  1. discover hubs for specific services → duplicate: Make the Discover UI more manageable for those with many subscriptions
  2. better search results → there’s a number of suggestions touching this; then again your point is rather vague and might as well indicate an issue with search?!:
  3. link to rotten tomatoes → duplicate: Suggestion: allow link to launch of IMDB / Rotten Tomatoes directly from the Plex Application or the Web App
  4. quality badges → duplicate(s):
  5. option to switch tabs at the bottom of a page → that seems to be a unique/new request
