While there are a lot of snes ,n64 and gameboy games i would love to play again at least half of the retro titles i would deem making plex arcade worth it or on ps1.
I believe the complication is the scanner (or more precisely plex identifying different platforms CD images from each other), rather than getting the core itself to run. I’ve had the games transcoder successfully running all kinds of cores* including PS1, but it’s useless unless plex’s library recognises the media.
But I have to agree, PS1 is very high on my list of most wanted cores.
(* Don’t ask how, it’s a hacky proof of concept and of no practical use, I just did it learning how the transcoder and core interacted)
I would be interested to know what the issue is identifying different platfom cd images. Personally i would happily have more cores if all it meant was i had to manually set a few things
this could easily be solved by having plex assume a format based on the location of the rom files ie folder name matching. if its in a folder called PS1 then its playstation, if its in a folder called saturn then its Sega Saturn etc…
Agreed, using the folder would probably be easier, I really liked the idea of being able to peek inside a disc image and identify from that.
That may be possible down the line, perhaps even just using the hash from the file to identify it but you could allow title matching based on folder and title very much how you do with films but for console roms and this would allow things like PS1, Sega CD, Saturn etc to be added which I’m sure we all would like to see.
@elan would it be possible for someone on the dev team to try out folder method so we can have something up and running for the consoles that use cd/dvd rom images? I would love to have something to trial on this as soon as possible and I’m sure there would be many more.
I’m guessing you simply added the correct information into the xml file for the emulators?
The tricky bit from Plex’ point of view would be the rom database and adding the right metadata for each title. This can, in theory at least, be accomplished by having us put roms for each platform into a folder to reflect that platform name ie SegaCD for the Sega MegaCD emulator, PS1 folder for the Sony Playstation emulator and so on. The scanner would then simply look at filename and folder name to acertain what platform the title is for and then grab the metadata from the online db they are using for roms. I’m hoping that the Devs will look down this route sooner rather than later to allow us to try this out, perhaps even at an Alpha stage for those of us happy to tinker under the hood
Nah, just passing the transcoder the right info (which includes hijacking a running game for the session info, as well as the core and the rom) and running it directly from the command line (so skipping the xml altogether). So as I say, zero practical use because for me the who reason I want Plex is for the front end, launching games from the command line (albeit over parsec) is hardly novel
Yeah i’m looking forward to having the management of Arcade embedded in the admin screens of Plex itself.
We’ll be adding support for a few disc-based platforms in an upcoming server release, just kicked off some work on it.
Fingers crossed it includes SegaCD, Saturn and PS1
Fantastic news! Whilst I started back in the 8-bit days, for me PS1 hits that sweet spot of nostalgia but still being good enough to play for a decent gaming session!
Also, Snatcher on the Mega-CD (Hideo Kojima’s first commercial release) is a bit of a favourite of mine too (I’m lucky enough to own a physical copy and working mega-cd 1).
Snatcher??? not one i recognise. However I do own a copy of Night Trap
oh and also love Parodius on the Sega Saturn.
and lets not forget Virtua Cop, Virtua Racing, Sega Rally and many more.
any idea when we might see something slip into an update? ![]()
We’re just finalizing metadata, then need to make server changes, then test, so it’ll be a little while…
Thanks for keeping us up to date on the progress. Can you let us know what additional platforms you will be adding?
hopefully we get switch and ps4 and we can throw more than one parsec (pro) accounts into our plex for our home users.
i want to buy the upcoming amd epyc, 96 core cpu anyway
