Is there a way to just record a nightly show on just one of the nights?

I just want to record a news program that airs every night, but I only want it to record on Thursdays. They have a special segment every Thursday called Throwback Thursdays where they show old footage from the local area. If I record it on Plex it becomes a conflict on most nights due to it being during primetime. I can do that on my current DVR, but I am not seeing that on Plex. Am I just overlooking that option somewhere? -Bill

You’re not. Currently you can limit by new/new and repeat, HD preference, channel, or airing time. There is a feature suggestion which would cover this, but it doesn’t currently have much interest (based on the number of votes):

Have any of the high voted items ever been added to Plex? Is there a list I can look at to see when they happened?

Sure, there have been many. You can search the Feature Suggestions section for implemented requests. There may be better filters, but here’s one I like:

This doesn’t catch them all, sadly.

Wow, couldn’t even find one DVR required feature going back to 2012. Sad, its seems like it could be a good DVR choice for users as it has so many clients supported. Too much of what are very basic DVR useablity is missing.

There’ve been a few. Though the only one I can think of off the top of my head is non-destructive commercial skipping. That one had been requested by many, for a long time. Unfortunately I cannot find the feature suggestion (it looks like it may have been deleted for some reason).

I’m fortunate in that my expectations of a good, basic DVR are met by Plex’s. Then again, my expectations are modest; I have only basic requirements and it meets all of them:

  • Have complete and accurate guide data.
  • Be able to record series or one-off episodes according to the parameters I set.
  • Be able to detect commercials in an accurate manner (as accurate as fuzzy logic can be).
  • Created files must be watchable.
    Bonus:
  • Automatic deletion should occur according to the parameters I set.

Anything beyond that is gravy. Though, I’ll admit, being able to schedule recordings by keyword might be interesting.

Are you saying they used to cut out the video for presumed commercials? That wasn’t how it was done by anyone. A file was created that told the player to skip, and to get them back you just erased those files. Yeah, your requirements are a pretty low bar. We’ve been using real DVR’s for over 20 years, and there are certain requirements that became standard at least 15 years ago. -Bill

Yes, up until about 3-4 months ago (late September) commercial skipping was a destructive process. Recorded files were analyzed for commercial breaks and the detected sections were permanently removed. You can still configure recordings this way; that’s what the “Detect commercials and delete” option means in your advanced recording settings.

Wow, I guess in their world, commercial detection is perfect. Not the world I live in…
