I used to be able to scan libraries from my shield. Now it seems that since late yesterday I can’t do that anymore. This was helpful because plex doesn’t auto scan when new content is added when you use a shield as a media server. Also if my shield isn’t awake and plex isn’t running when I do scan for new items, for some reason a lot of my metadata gets emptied into the trash. I htink it’s due to the hard drives not being active for a moment. But this is why scanning from the shield itself is helpful. Is there a way to enable this feature again or something?
If I go into the Plex (client) on the shield and then go to my Library and move over to the 3 dots, I have the option to “Scan Library Files” for that library. I think this is what you are looking for…
SIGH… that’s because I was on 7.23 (I think) and now was just upgraded to 7.24.3.13840… and YES you are correct, that option has been removed.
I would also like to know WHY this was removed…
You should probably go to Settings (the screw driver and wrench icon) and then on the left side click on Settings → Library and make sure “Empty trash automatically after every scan” is unchecked. Since your drives aren’t available I’m pretty sure your media is actually being removed from Plex and then when you scan it again (once the drives are available) it’s actually getting re-added.
Can’t help you on the scanning from the SHIELD, as that’s not something I do so I haven’t paid attention to if they removed it. If they did, my guess is that it will come back based on the announcements for other platforms where it looks like they are adding that in. Might have been an oversight on their end that it got removed or they are going to add it back. I know this post Plex for Android - #323 by jesusmc says they reverted back from the new design they are going to launch (keeping it in beta) so that could have something to do with it.

Yea… so I went back to 7.23.0 and it is there but when I upgraded to 7.24.3.13840 so it was removed (by accident I hope) from there. Seems like a weird thing to just remove but who knows. I would like to know if this is how it is or is this by accident. I you revert back to 7.23.0 if you really need that functionality and for all I know, it might not be coming back.
Like I said, I in other announcement threads for other players I have seen them mention adding “Scan Library Files” as an option, see the Roku thread for instance: Plex for Roku, second bullet under the New section.
My guess is it will be coming back, but I have no proof of that.

Good to know, and thanks for looking into this… I just loaded the 7.25.0.13841 and it’s still on in there but hoping it will be added in later betas so we know it’s coming back.
I’m probably wrong, but I thought the “Scan Library Files” action was really just a refresh of the home page on Android TV, so the app didn’t used the cached info. It seemed to be mis-named to me.
In fact, I never really needed to use this action, because the Android TV app’s home page seemed to update properly until the latest version or two. I have found that if you navigate to a library, then back to the home page, the home page is refreshed.
I don’t use a Shield as a server, so my experience may not be relevant.
EDIT: Apple TV users have been complaining for months since that same option was removed. They are told it is a server bug that needs to be fixed.
I have plex for my shields set to not empty trash on every scan already. Before I thought plex kept losing track of my content but I figured out when the shield sleeps it takes a moment for it to read the hard drives over my network on wake. So yeah that option really helps.
My guess was correct.
According to this announcement post: Plex for Android the option is back in the latest Android version.
