I have a friend who I let stream from me and everything was going fine. Now she said it’s asking her to pay? I thought this was a free app for streaming from a plex media server? When I logged into her account it just ask me to buy a plex pass. I saw some people saying $5 one time fee but it doesn’t give me that option. Says $5/ month like $34 a year I think and $100+ for lifetime. What gives? Does she have to buy a plex pass to stream from me?
I think she’s trying to stream from a tablet (iPad) if this changes things. I logged in via iPhone. Had no problems.
Many Plex client apps have a limited time trial, then after that, a one time fee per account.
So, if friend has an ipad and an iphone that logs into the same account, friend can have plex on both for that one price.
If any friend gets plex pass - they pretty much get every app for no additional charge.
So, if you have a friend that has only one or two IOS devices, one time fee = good value.
If you have a friend that wants to watch on Xbox, PS4, IOS mobile, ATV, Roku, Android and a smart tv from all over their primary house, AND a rental, then Plex pass may be better value.
https://plex.tv/web is free, but is ugly to use on a small screen.
As for your ‘why?’ tag - Plex is a business. They want to earn money.
Can I log into her account and pay the fee for her? When I looked it was asking $5 / month not a one time fee.
Please be careful not to confuse the offer to obtain a $5 Plex Pass monthly subscription with the one-time app purchase.
When signed in to a Plex Pass account, app activation is automatic and free .
If a free account is being used, the app will limit playback duration until fully activated. This can be done by either:
- The one time in-app purchase
- Signing in with your Plex Pass account.
