Issue with Plex Samsung Smart Tv App

I just double checked the app on my TV and there is no “Quality Suggestions”-Setting as described in the Plex-Support-Articles at https://support.plex.tv/articles/quality-suggestions/

Am i looking in the wrong place @morganj ? Any ideas?

@Mumpitz Explained in this same thread…

So you mean the Setting “Quality Suggestions” was already removed in version 5.71.1 ?
Or will there be a new version (hopefully soon) which will fix the problem?

The feature has just been disabled, we don’t require a release to disable some features. We are trying to get to the bottom of why it is causing issues for some people and not others as we are still unable to reproduce the issue.

Ah ok, any idea, why it’s still causing problems in my setup?
I am happy to provide logs for any further analysis

Btw acessing the server from a cellphone / tablet is working without any problems inside as well as outside the local network. Only the Samsung TV is currently experiencing problems so i would exclude the server itself as the culprit

So are you still experiencing issues even though we disabled the feature? If so what exactly are you experiencing?

Yes we know the issue is with Smart TVs, the feature has not been disabled on Android and Roku which are the other two platforms that currently support it.

Yes, unfortunately.
The connection between the Samsung TV and its Plex App to the local Plex Server on a Win 11 Pc was working fine until roughly about a week ago.
I was still able to browse the content from the Plex Server but after starting any item, it just gets stuck loading it. I mean it brings up the loading circle which just freezes after a couple of rounds. After maybe 10 seconds you can see the regular player-menue like pause/play and even the items length and quality / subtitle settings but the content itself will simply not load any further.
A few times i also got a message in the top right corner about “testing connection speed” (forgot the exact wording) which was something new.
Started to seriously look into the problem a few days ago and stumbled across this post which seemed like the exact same issue.

My setup:

Server Version#: 1.32.7.7621 (now Beta 1.32.8.7639)
Player Version#: TV 2017 / 5.71.1 / Plex for Samsung / 17_KANTM_UHD
The “allow insecure connections” in the app on the tv and “secure connections: prefered” on the local server (Win 11) are set.
The TV is connected via 5G WLAN to the LAN.

Acessing the server from a cellphone / tablet is working inside as well as outside the local network is working fine.

Already tried:

  • restarted tv
  • restarted pc with plex server
  • resetted wlan on tv and rejoined the wlan
  • resetted app on the tv
  • reinstalled app on the tv
  • tripple checked and re-set the “secure connection”-thing on pc and tv
  • updated server to beta version 1.32.8.7639 but no luck

Any further ideas?

Would you mind enabling logging to your server on your Samsung TV (How to get TV logs), reproducing the issue then sharing your server logs?

Sure, i created the logs (enable logging to server - reproduced error - disable logging to server - created logfile on server a zip file…) - can i send them to you via pm?

After some further analysis with @morganj we were able to figure out the problem - it was caused by the Win11 22h2 update disabling Plex in the local Win11 firewall. After correcting the firewall rules everything went back to normal.

If you run into similar problems you can find the settings in Win11 at “Firewall- & Network Protection”. Here you can see which profile (Private, Public…) is currently active. At the bottom of the page you can open the “Advanced settings” where you get a long list with all the inbound / outbound exceptions & rules. Just look for Plex on the inbound list and make sure, that it is permitted.
