Issue with the new Plex for Windows app

Server Version#: 1.16.4.1469
Player Version#: 1.0.0.792-d4adb056

There are several issues that I found with the new Plex for Windows client.

  • There is no full screen button available before I start playing something - no biggie, but would be nice to have
  • The biggest problem I have is that 4K HDR content is not playing smoothly (while it does in the Plex Media Player). It isn’t exactly choppy, but similar to file encoded with the wrong framerate and is unpleasant to watch. I do have enough bandwidth (as I said PMP works fine).
    What I noticed is that Plex for Windows uses hardware acceleration as I was monitoring Task manager. However, GPU decoding never shows over 30% usage and GPU 3D never shows over 40%, CPU is at 10% so it is not my hardware.
    The computer I use for playback is i7-4790, 16GB RAM, Radeon RX 580. There is only one screen: 4K non-HDR tv (so plex does do tone-mapping, but so does Plex Media Player). There are also some artifacts that come up once in a while. All Drivers are the latest.

Problem solved by disabling hardware decoding.

This fixed it. Shame hardware encoding is broken with the update…

@m00nman what’s your GPU setup?

AMD RX 580 to a 4K non-HDR tv. No other monitors/screens. If that’s what you mean.
