Issue with videos needing transcoding when they didn't previously

Hi everyone, I’ve been running Plex for quite some time on my Seagate Personal Cloud. For the most part it’s chugged along happily with direct play but is just too small for my needs so I recently put together a build using my older parts, running on an i5-6600k with 16gb of ram and 40tb of storage across a parity storage space. I’ve had the 2nd system set up for a couple of months with no major issues that I’ve noticed, however I did notice a couple of files that wouldn’t play.

Today things changed where some of the content I have no longer plays directly on the tv. This includes video files that I watched on the same device only a couple of days ago. I took a look through the logs and tried to decipher it as best as I can and it looks like Direct Play is disabled, files must be transcoded and then it fails pretty quickly giving an error message that Playback can’t start.

For reference, I took the same video file and uploaded it to my Personal Cloud and then tried to play it which resulted in a fail. The same video file was played on the Windows system on the same tv just a few nights ago so something changed in the past 24 hours or so. While troubleshooting I did update the Windows system but had no luck. As far as I’m aware the tv hasn’t done any updates but it’s possible?

Does anybody have any idea what might be going on? I’ve created a log with 2 sessions. The first is from the Windows server that played a video successfully along with the next video that failed, and then a 2nd from the Personal Cloud with the same failed video that seems to be failing in the same way.

Some more follow up, I decided to test how it would work, sending it to my phone from the Windows server (Win 10 → Samsung S9+). I seem to be running into the same issue. I then tested on my Personal Cloud and it’s the same thing again. Truly stumped! :slight_smile:
