It’s Been One Week With the New Experience on Mobile—And We’re Just Getting Started

What a week! We kicked off the rollout to a small percentage of our newly updated Plex mobile app for iOS and Android, and we want to start by saying a huge thank you to everyone who’s jumped in—explored, shared feedback, and helped shape the future of Plex mobile.

  • We’ve heard from so many of you across the forums, Reddit, and beyond. Your passion is loud and clear—and that’s exactly what we love about this community.

Let’s Talk About What’s Happening

We’ve been building this new mobile experience for quite some time, with help from many of you during our Preview phase. Your feedback has helped shape every release, fix, and polish we’ve pushed out—and now that it’s in the hands of even more users, we are continuing to learn more.

Plex supports an incredibly wide range of devices, media formats, and server setups. That’s both what makes it awesome… and a huge challenge to deliver a consistently amazing experience across our user base. However, we have amazing and passionate users who help us ensure that we can cover as many of these cases as possible.

Currently, we have only rolled out the release to a (very) small percentage of users in order to capture any unknown issues and mitigate impact. Please know, we are working through the newly reported issues as fast as possible and the team is resolving them as they are reproduced. Find out how you can help further down in this post.

The not-so-good news? Some of you are not having a good experience. Which we did not want. Please read the info at the bottom of the post to help us help you.
The best news? We’re on it. Like, right now.

An Important Note on the Preview App

One important misstep we want to acknowledge: the Preview version of the app wasn’t initially updated with the final production code. That led to some users continuing to report issues that had already been resolved. We’ve since updated the Preview and we encourage all Preview users to move over to the full production app for the latest and greatest experience, once it is available to you

A further note, we will soon be decommissioning our Preview app to follow our normal Beta paths, we will update you once that’s in place.

What We’re Working On

Since launch, our teams have been laser-focused on two key areas:

  • Bug Fixes: Issues that we didn’t know would scale with larger usage, issues that are tough to reproduce, including crashes, lag, and UI glitches.
  • Improvements: Enhancements that were already on our radar like some existing and new features and other user-requested polish—are on their way and re-prioritized based on what we hear the impact to your usage is.

Our previous forum post here, also mentions some features coming soon.

What’s New Today

We’ve just released an update that brings improvements based on your reports. If you’re using the new app, make sure it’s updated—it might just resolve what you’ve been experiencing.

Here are some of those updates:

  • Accessibility improvements on profile pages
  • Accessibility improvements on Libraries page
  • Accessibility improvements on Home page
  • OTA playback improvements
  • Browsing library made easier
  • Fixed browsing unmatched shows and seasons
  • Onboarding stuck on favorite libraries fixed

How You Can Help

The best thing you can do right now is continue sharing detailed, constructive reports. If you’re running into something, let us know the following:

  • Your device (make and model)
  • The device OS (and OS version)
  • Plex app version
  • What you were doing when the issue happened
  • Whether it’s reproducible
  • Bonus: Attach logs to the forum post (support article here)
  • Bonus Bonus: Attach screenshots to the forum post or link to videos
  • Extra bonus: If something is fixed, let us know in your forum topic—it helps us close the loop

Start a new topic—we’re monitoring closely and reaching out when we need more details.

The Journey Going Forward

We know this hasn’t been a perfect launch for everyone, which is not our intention—but we’re committed to making the new app experience better every day. After all, we use Plex too! Your feedback during this time helps push the experience forward for everyone.

Thanks again for your support, and for being an integral part of the Plex community.
